Who are you and what do you do?
Jeremy Miller aka “Dj Jaymystic”
Describe your product/service in 1-3 sentences.
Limited DJ services, DJ in Orange County and LA
How did you get started in that industry?
Started DJ’ing house parties, high school dances and raves in 1990 and never looked back. I have a huge passion for underground music and love to expose people to new and unique music they may not have heard before.
What were some of the main tipping points (if any) or a-ha moments? How did the tipping points happen?
I went to an event in 1991 to see a band called 808 State, which was once of the early techno bands from Europe to make a splash here in the US. I really loved electronic music from the 80s so techno was a natural extension of this passion. Once I got to the event, I couldn’t really figure out want was going or where the music was coming from. There was no stage or obvious source of the music, just 1000s of people dancing to really great music. I finally found where the dj was located and just sat back and watched in amazement at how he transitioned between songs without ever missing beat. I was hooked and have spent over 20years playing music for people.
What were your biggest mistakes, or biggest wastes of time / money?
Not really a “waste” of time and money but music shopping definitely put a pinch on budget in the early years.
Key manufacturing and marketing lessons learned?
Never take a gig that you don’t want to do. Never play music that you don’t want to play. Always know the type of crowd you are going to play in front of. Always have a business card and treat people with respect even if they come up and ask you to play “the worst song ever”.
Any PR wins? Medi
a, well-known users, or company partnerships, etc? How did they happen?
Have worked with & for many well-known people over the years, for exampleI dj’ed one of Shaq’s Championship parties in the early 2000s at the Sunset Room in Hollywood. I also dj’ed several movie and tv show wrap parties as well as some very large festivals and underground events.
What software/tools and resources, mentors or groups did you find useful for growing, if any?
While I still love the feeling and sound of vinyl, I have graduated to digital djing and would never go back. My current setup consists of a Macbook Pro, Trakor Pro djing Software, and a Native Instrument’s S4 controller. The world of digital djing allows me to play music the way I have always wanted too. I only play the sections of songs I like and am able to remix, loop and sample every track I play which gives me the freedom to express myself through music.
If you were to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
Would have concentrated more on the business side of djing as well as produced more of my own music.
What’s next?
I currently have several club residencies in Los Angeles and Orange County. While djing is not my “day job” or a full time career, I still love to perform and jump at the chance to play music in the right setting.
