At 65 years young, Ken is a champion pole vaulter, surf enthusiast, and a “poster-child” of how an active lifestyle improves the quality of one’s life.

How did you hear about Innovative Results?
I was referred to Innovative Results by my Sports Med doctor who told me he had heard very good things about the work being done there. I needed a workout regime that supported my pole vault agility and strength development and he thought you guys could do that.

What about Innovative Results interested you in coming in?

Why did you decide to step into the gym?
Same as the above comment.

What was your first reaction once you entered the gym?
The workouts with Dane were dynamic and not simply machine strength training. I was moving and exercising muscles that clearly supported my desire to improve my pole vaulting strength and mobility. It was clear the staff, Dane specifically, had done their research on pole vaulting and knew how to get the best out of me.

What was one thing you like about Innovative Results that kept you coming back for more?
The complete focus on me and my needs. Dane spends every second watching, coaching, correcting and encouraging. Together we put together a long term game plan designed to peak at just the right time.

How has your vision of movement changed since you’ve started working out at Innovative Results?
Absolutely. I am more flexible, more toned and more competent as a 65 year old pole vaulter. That would not be possible without the effort put forth by Innovative Results and Dane.

How has Innovative Results helped your mindset in daily living? (at home, school, work, or in the community)
I generally feel in great shape, healthy and positive in my outlook. I attribute much of that to the results being achieved at IR.

What was the biggest obstacle (mental/structural/physical) you’ve crossed since starting at Innovative Results? 

KenStCyrI suffered a ruptured appendix soon after joining IR. Three months later, after surgery and full recovery when I was able to begin working out again I was on a tight timeline to get prepared for several major competitions. Dane and IR were able to get me back in shape quickly by constantly working me as hard as possible without crossing the boundary to be injury prone.

How were you able to surpass your obstacle?
Due to the commitment of Dane and IR we had a training program that maximized my ability to regain strength and flexibility. I was fortune enough to win a Bronze Medal at the US National Senior Games in June and then subsequently win the USA Masters Games.. I also won a Silver Medal at the North and Central America Masters Championships in Toronto in August 2017. It was a team effort with IR all the way!

Short-Term Successes for Improved Quality of Life

Okay so we’ve already talked about all of the immediate successes you experience at Innovative Results here: http://www.innovative-results.com/blog/2014/what-improved-quality-of-life-means-to-innovative-results/. Now we will talk about what improved quality of life means for your short-term successes. Improved quality of life is pretty self-explanatory (read the link above to see how in-depth we go to help people achieve improved quality of life immediately), and we will define “short-term” as three months to one year. After a client experiences the immediate mindset, movement, and recovery results http://www.innovative-results.com/blog/2014/what-improved-quality-of-life-means-to-innovative-results/, they start to reap physiological (body) and psychological (mind) benefits that they can enjoy for the rest of their life.

Psychological Short-term Successes

  • Mental Security and Stability (Mental Toughness)
    Wouldn’t it be nice to have the ability to do the things you don’t want to do in the short term, in order the have the things that you really want longer term. If feeling better, looking better, moving better, and performing better were easy, everyone would be super heroes, or at least great looking, high-level performers, that achieved great success in all aspects of their life. But being able to handle a little discomfort daily is not what most people want to hear, when they say they need to look better, be healthier, lose weight, gain muscle, look toned, feel better in these pants/jeans/dress/bikini/shorts, win a match/competition, or just plain move without pain takes more than our average dose of mental toughness. If you ask a client of Innovative Results that has been coming for more than a month, they will not lie to you and say it is easy, but they will most likely say it is fun, and they will always say they are better off than they were a month, two, three, or more ago. Whether they lost 20 pounds or can move better (without pain), it comes down to small successes daily that add up to real results, and this is all possible because of their HUGE improvements in mental toughness! Being able to handle a little bit more discomfort to rid themselves of the pain of looking sad, feeling bad, and moving with problems. These small daily wins add up inside the IR client’s mental scoreboard, creating mental security and stability that each client can carry with themselves for a lifetime.
  • Power of Diligent Action (Goal Achievements)
    Along with mental security and stability, each Innovative Results client understand the power of diligent action. Because of their small successes daily, each IR client understands it is the person that is willing to dedicate time, energy, and resources to a cause that is long-term, beneficial, cost-saving, and health-improving for more than just two weeks. Each client begins to reap the incredible benefits of their short-term psychological success at the end of the first month, and most of them stay the course well after their initial goal is achieved, because it feels good, and they realize they can achieve so much more with the power of diligent action.

Physiological Short-term Successes

  • Improved Mobility
    Each training session starts out with mobility, and ends with either static stretching or self-myofascial release (SMR), and this daily routine helps create better functional range of motion. Even during the training session, each coach is helping every client reach their best functional range of motion and engaged control during each movement. This increased mobility is the foundation of every progression, and extremely important for increased performance, stamina, strength, and power. Without proper ankle mobility, a person will have a hard time walking, running, and jumping. Without proper wrist mobility, a person will have a hard time pushing. Without proper shoulder mobility a person will have a hard time pulling. These are the most basic human movements. Everyone should enjoy performing basic human function, and we believe everyone can with proper mobility. With improved mobility, which starts improving the first month, and will continue to build as the months go on, IR has witnessed its clients achieve movements, stamina, strength, and power that the person wrote off as impossibilities http://www.innovative-results.com/blog/2013/dave-kettle-com/. This is just one of the many stories the IR Team hears everyday, about another IR client able to achieve far more than she or he ever though possible.
  • Improved Stability
    The possibilities begin with mobility, but are continued through the short-term success of improved stability. As each client is taken from where they are to where they would like to be, the IR Team develops each person’s stability along with their mobility. Sometimes the person coming to Innovative Results is a sedentary person that hasn’t moved in years, while other times it is an active person that wants to continue to do the things they love (i.e. surfing, hiking, running, swimming, biking, and the list goes on). Either way, the team surrounds each client with knowledgeable, helpful, and guided progressions to develop the person’s stability, so they can begin to improve their stamina, strength, and power. After just a few months every client at Innovative Results has not only improved balance, but also can move in every plane of motion with greater ease than when they first began. This is from their improved stability.
  • Improved Endurance
    Every person in the world can benefit from improved endurance; even elite power lifters need to be able to lift their desired weights more than one time on the platform. Improving endurance at Innovative Results is made easier through improved mobility and stability. The muscles and soft tissues are no longer fighting against the load of one’s body, and movement of the body becomes more efficient. Not to mention the fact that the daily training success the IR Team brings to each client improves his or her aerobic function activating recovery and improving endurance. This increased aerobic capacity brings a new level of mental toughness, as well as increasing the client’s ability to train, work, play, and function in everyday life. Innovative Results is constantly hearing of client’s telling stories of improved sex-life, work-life, and family-life because of their ever-increasing stamina. The improved stamina begins after week two, and continues to improve throughout the life of the client at Innovative Results.
  • Improved Strength
    Some people desire strength to be bigger, others don’t want strength, because they want to be smaller, but IR clients realize strength doesn’t have to mean big, and it mostly means more confidence. Getting big from strength has much more to do with diet and nutrition choices than it has to do with the size of weights one lifts. At Innovative Results we see improved strength regardless of how big or small or toned someone is trying to be. Strength has much more to do with nervous adaptation, muscle recruitment, and technique than it has to do with growth. I have seen surprisingly small women and men out-lift larger women and men, because the IR Team helped improve the client’s weak points: grip, back, hips, shoulders, knees, and ankles. As the IR Team helps each client realize more and more physical strength, the client than realizes the strength is as much physical as it is mental.   • Improved Power
    Once the mobility, stability, endurance, and strength are improved, each IR client begins to see their power improving. What each client once thought was his or her 100% effort in one repetition, sprint, push, pull, and/or rotation, becomes so much more. How Does IR Create YOUR Workout

Progressions are the foundation of the Innovative results fitness program.

They are built to ensure that all clients have their needs met, whether those needs are fat loss, muscle gains, or just to get moving. However it goes deeper than just words on a paper telling the IR Training Team what workout to do. The mechanics of movement progress in the following order, Mobility, Stability, Endurance, Strength, and then Power.

Mobility is first because without it you do not have the range of motion to simply stay grounded enough to create stability, endurance, strength, and power. Imagine having a sprained ankle, the reason why you limp is because all of the swelling has taken any range of motion you had before and made it immobile.

Stability comes second because, now that you are lacking mobility in that hurt ankle you cannot put any pressure on it to stabilize yourself. They go hand in hand, so you must fix one to help the other.

Next on our list is endurance, the reason endurance is so vital for any athlete or person getting in shape is because without the right amount of endurance you can’t push yourself to your maximum limits.instagram 5

For example, say we have a 300lb guy who realistically should be able to squat a lot of weight due to his own mass, right? Well, if he lacks endurance we could have him do 1 rep with just a little weight, or even his own body weight and he will become fatigued or “gassed out.” Without that endurance to even lift his body weight he cannot build up his relative strength that he will require to become powerful. Before you can be powerful you must first become strong. In order to dramatically increase your strength and power you must build up that endurance, then no measly piece of iron will stand in your way.
