Meet Jeremy Blanco:

I am Jeremy, an urban dweller turned avid outdoor educator and adventurer after an eventful weekend trip to Yosemite Valley. Since then I received a degree in Sociology and Environmental Studies, taught at an outdoor science school, led conservation teams into the back-country, directed a summer camp in Japan, and of course have spent every other moment learning various outdoor skills from mentors, coworkers, and fellow backpackers, now becoming a bit of a multi-tool.

I love dabbling in different mindsets and cultures through outdoor rec trips such as swimming in lakes, trail and snow marathons, barbecuing of course, art, and a specialty in backpacking and traveling by bicycle. These passions and modes of life have led to the jungles of Peru, the windy glaciers of Patagonia, drinking yak milk in the Himalayas feeling like death, calling of a final summit push on a dream backcountry snowboard project in Japan, walking into a blowfish while spearfishing off the coast of Panama, and other stories involving culture, luck, and hardship.

This was directly possible because of a few reasons I’d like to talk to you about at the workshop and pass along some tricks of the trade that are surely going to be impactful for you as they have been for me to this point.

Benefits of Recovery, and How to Effectively Implement Meditation

October 23, 2017 by Jessica 7 Comments

Amanda Clover, Active Recovery, Innovative Results, Orange County Fitness Playground, Orange County yoga, yogaBy Coach Aubrie Pohl

Mindset. Movement. RECOVERY.

When is your next planned recovery day?

Your body needs to rebuild.
To enhance performance, utilize rest days, and PLAN recovery days.
Recovery is not quite the same as a rest day.

As we allow our body to rest, we accept the action of non-doing and recuperate our nervous system to feel awake.
Recovery is implementing actions and techniques to maximize your body’s repair. This includes proper nutrition, hydration, stretching, self-myofascial release, ice and heat, stress management, intentional breathing, and many other methods that travel deeper than just muscular repair.

Recovery involves repairing the mindset to accept more positivity, diligence, and healing.

It allows one to communicate to their body and re-invigorate torn and fatigued muscle tissue.

Recovery is intentional and integrated effort that should seep into our daily lives to enhance longevity and durability.

* Eat nutrient dense meals to give yourself the proper amount of protein, carbohydrates, fats, and micronutrients that will aid in fueling your body for greater performance and faster recovery. A mindful diet will keep your energy clean, reduce feelings of sluggishness, and clear brain fog. Stay away from processed foods and toxins as much as possible.
* Drink enough water for your urine to be close to clear! Water helps all our internal functions. You will experience more energy, softer skin, and contribute to the well being of your internal organs.
* Stretching and mobility movements will communicate to your nervous system to expand passive and active range of motion in your body.
* Self-myofascial release are techniques and methods of using tools to help heal tissue, release tension, and regenerate elasticity in your muscles.
* Ice and Heat help calm down superficial tissues that are inflamed and release muscular stiffness. Ice baths and whole body ice therapy have lately been proven to be extremely beneficial to overall tissue vitality.
* Stress management is important to regulate our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) response and attend to the parasympathetic (rest and digest) response during recovery days. Calm your mind, understand what thoughts are serving you no purpose, and develop more positive neuroplasticity training in your daily life.
* Breathing is both unconscious and conscious. Breathing practices have been used around the world as methods of regulating internal processes, strengthening the lungs, and promoting meditative states and concentration to calm the body.

Tune in to the recovery of your body, and to the recovery of your mind as well.

What image pops into your head when you hear the word meditation?

Is it an image of one individual sitting cross-legged on the ground, with their eyes closed?

Does that image deter you from scheduling the time for “meditation”?

What if, I told you there was a way for you to easily implement meditation into your daily life?
You see, meditation does not have any regulations other than one, to be entirely present in the moment at hand.

Meditation can be accomplished while standing, sitting, running, riding, dancing, and during any other physical stance.

Just breathe, and focus on your inhales and exhales.
Allow yourself to be saturated with the present moment and let the moments before hand and the predictions of the future journey into the ether where they belong.
Tune in, to the NOW.

For just a moment, allow all your stressors to be released, feelings of the past and future to leave, and only experience what is in front of you.

That is meditation, and without those restricted predicaments of when meditation is “supposed” to happen, you can now see the limitless possibilities of when to experience this deeper sensation of life.

It is when you choose to let your monkey mind be still, wherever you are.

The effects of meditation expand and spread through the rest of your life, especially in stages of recovery.

Experience the benefits of body and mind recovery immediately after you start implementing these practices into your daily life.

4 Workouts That Will Keep You Going All Year

February 13, 2017 by Jessica 2 Comments

Article By: Paige Johnson, Learnfit.org

In exercise, a lot of people tend to develop the habit of sticking to what works for them. However as with anything, all things change —including your body and what it needs to thrive. If you allow your muscles to become accustomed to your workout routine with little to no variety, you will begin to see little to no results. Little to no results will in turn lead to frustration and inactivity, which is never the goal! This year take the time to add variety to your existing fitness regimen and watch as your body changes along with you!

Join a jogging clubincrease focus, increase speed, eliminate meds, lose weight, gain muscle, get fast, Innovative Results, training

The benefits of jogging are tremendous and one of the best ways to yield results in your overall health and wellbeing. Jogging improves your cardiovascular fitness, strengthens your bones and it aids in maintaining a healthy weight. If you are new to jogging or just trying to find ways to spruce up your routine, joining a joggers group may be just the right step for you! You may find a runners club sponsored by your local sports store or you can form one in your own neighborhood! The primary foundation of a running group is to meet one or two times a week and run a select distance as a group. The encouragement and team response you will receive from participating in such a group will prove to be beneficial to your general mood as well as your health. The accountability that comes with running in a group also will assist you in maximizing your fitness efforts to attain better results!

Try a spin class

Spinning, a specific format of indoor cycling, is a exercise routine that has quickly made its way around the world. As you ride on a stationary cycling bike under the supervision of a certified spinning instructor, your heart rate will shoot up which in return allows you to sweat, burn a sustainable amount of calories and improve your lower body strength. Most spin classes typically last an hour or less and can be taken at your local gym or fitness facility. Classes are uptempo and accompanied with loud, adrenaline pumping music. Be sure to bring a towel for sweat and plenty of water! Consider bringing a friend to enjoy the new experience with you!

Practice yoga

Yoga is not your typical heart racing type of exercise, however if done properly the benefits practicing are amazing. The practice of yoga originated in India and has widespread across the globe as a phenomenal way to improve your mental and physical health and wellness. Physical benefits of yoga include increased core strength, increased flexibility and weight reduction. The mental benefits of yoga sharpens your concentration, helps you de-stress and also increases body awareness.

Start using weights

Jennifer Lifting with Kettlebell

The use of weights, also known as strength training is a wildly successful way to add more value to your fitness efforts. The use of weights create a compound called resistance, which can be explained as using your muscles to work against the extra pounds. Weight training helps you burn calories more efficiently than traditional exercise and it also reduces body fat. The best way to become introduced to strength training is by acquiring a personal trainer to allow yourself to see maximum results and avoid potential injuries. It doesn’t hurt to get some equipment for your home either.

Incorporating one or more of these exercises into your routine will be more than enough to keep your fitness goals on track throughout the year. Adding variety is the best way to ensure that you are getting the most out of your efforts, and it will keep you from inactivity due to boredom. Keep your routine fun and fresh by stepping outside of your workout habits and begin to enjoy the fittest, healthiest version of yourself!

Victory and the Versaclimber is an Innovative Results Daily Habit – Read The Story of E.O. and Sidney Here

Victory and The VersaClimber: Part of an Innovative Results Daily Habit

By: Margaret Fajardo

Eric Olson, weight loss, healthy weight loss
E.O. With a Sea Monster

It has become a time-honored ritual for two. Having just finished Innovative Results’ signature fitness training session, Sidney Sudberg and Eric Olson get on the VersaClimber and bust out a series of sprints. For many fitness session attendees at Innovative Results, the VersaClimber is a personal Everest. Its unique vertical climbing motion works the entire body, not to mention spiking the heart rate within milliseconds. Despite its efficiency, getting on the VersaClimber for 10-, 20-, and 30-second bursts, or even a full minute is no easy task.

Sudberg is a chiropractor of almost 70 years. Among his many physical credits is being an avid practitioner of yoga. Before every Innovative Results session, Sudberg stretches out and works on a variety of yoga poses. Olson is an entrepreneur in his late 40s. An experienced motocross rider, Olson has successfully gone from slow and overweight to defined and explosive in the last year and has continually advanced in his sport.

Sudberg and Olson show up to the 6am session, always ready for whatever the coaches have planned. Whether the workout focuses on upper body, lower body, or total body, Sudberg and Olson push themselves to the max. Getting on the VersaClimber then becomes an even sweatier yet sweeter victory to their morning routine.

Why Innovative Results Incorporates the VersaClimber

VersaClimber 3 at Innovative Results“It’s not a machine. It’s a tool, “ said Aaron Guyett, Innovative Results Founder and Master Coach. Guyett makes it a point to emphasize this distinction when referring to the VersaClimber. While electric fans are the only machines to speak of at Guyett’s gym – there are no static weight machines, treadmills, or TVs – his space certainly isn’t lacking in quality tools and equipment. Guyett’s coaching expertise maximizes each and every training tool available to him and his coaching staff, and the VersaClimber is no exception.

As Guyett elaborates: “We made the VersaClimber a big part of our programming because it integrates contralateral movements. It works your right and left brain together, which makes your brain function at a higher level, and reduces your stress at the same time.”

This brain-body connection produces multiple benefits. As Guyett explains, “Through its contralateral pattern, the VersaClimber has allowed current clients to overcome mental stresses and find deeper strength and deeper stores of energy by building aerobic capacity, and pushing them to new levels of understanding of how well their body and mind can perform.”

Irvine fitness training, Irvine Personal Training, Irvine Gym, Innovative Results, Orange County Fitness PlaygroundWhile most of us don’t climb vertically very often, the VersaClimber can still be an effective tool for overall fitness. Guyett talks about how the VersaClimber has “helped improve people’s coordination and performance in other active pursuits such as running, walking, sprinting, swimming, cycling. On top of the added benefits of increasing lean body mass, reduced body fat, and higher aerobic capacity, the reduced stress levels and efficient brain function, will improve people’s quality of life at home and at work.”

Get In, Get On, and Go All The Way

It looks like one of them will beat the other. But in fact, all are victorious, because Sudberg and Olson aren’t competing against each other. They’re each trying to beat their own previous records. As Olson said, “[The VersaClimber is] Something that gives you a number. When you’re doing it, you have the feedback of where you’re hitting, what the number is, how many feet per minute, what your time’s gonna be. It’s kinda like a true measurement.” His numbers have greatly increased. He now can climb 300 feet in one minute, completely obliterating his first time result of 202 feet in the same time. As Olson recalled, “First time we did a minute test, I hit 202, I was gassed and tired, I mean beat. I’ve gotten over 300 now and walk away from it. That’s the mark.” As a motocross rider, Olson has seen the added benefits of his cardio climb. He said, “Now, I can stay on my bike longer, have a lower heart rate while I’m riding.”

In the last year and a half at Innovative Results, Sudberg has experienced various kinds of progress. Among the greatest rewards are gaining more courage and conquering challenges. As Sudberg said, “What I didn’t expect was to experience the great sense of accomplishment and physical strength after doing the daily exercise routine and that with the greater resistance, came the keen sense that all challenges in life are the same.” This mindset helps him power through the added challenge of the Versaclimber. As Sudberg recalls, “At first, this was near impossible for me to keep up with, but with the consistent commitment of E.O. and my own personal commitment to overcoming my physical and mental resistance, I prevailed and now look forward to these ‘extra credit’ workouts, physically as well as mentally.”

Sudberg and Olson aren’t the only ones who go the extra mile. With the support and expertise of every Innovative Results coach, every client can successfully reach his or her own personal summit. Much like each VersaClimber step, every effort brings you closer and closer to your best.

The Benefits of Yoga at The Orange County Fitness Playground

March 31, 2016 by ptpt 2 Comments

By Mark Elmasry

Yoga will put balance into your life.AmandaC

Yoga takes mental and physical endurance that will come with practice. When you combine Eischen’s yoga progression with your daily routine your life will ultimately improve in many ways. Specifically your physical and mental well being will improve. It is the missing factor to complete our list of activities. This article is all about the benefits of yoga.

Specifically Eischen’s yoga flow, or any introductory yoga flow, will introduce the subject to a concise and simple progression.

The living, breathing, growing personification of yoga is the mental practice.

Can we stay in one place for an indefinite amount of time?
Can we learn to sync our breathing with our ever focused and controlled movements and intentions?

The epitome of this spiritual practice is learning to meditate and disconnect from distractions. If we can forget about our task list and our mobile devices for a successful hour of meditation and inward focus then we can achieve the mental aspect that yoga is trying to offer us all. The first item that any distraction will tear us away from will be the most basic involuntary movement in our body is breathing. Getting oxygen in and out of our lungs is essential for keeping our heart beating and our nervous system functioning as well as every other process in the body, but it is also the most powerful discipline in basic meditation.

We can all do a simple test right now.IMG_20150420_113021

Start by closing your eyes, after you read this, then focus on your breath for 5 long deep inhales through your nose with sealed lips followed by 5 even longer exhales out of your mouth.

When you opened your eyes and came back to this article, did you feel any different?
Did you feel more in control of your breathing and more care-free about your surroundings?

That is exactly what yoga is. Allowing the practitioner to ground themselves, bringing the stress levels down and regulate their stress hormone levels and clear their mind as they get more in tune and listen to their bodies.

The term for that breath is Ujjayi, which is the common thread sewing all types of yoga practice together. Yoga will only offer a progression in certain postures if your body agrees with them at the specific time you are practicing them.

IMG_20150420_114522

Every time we step into our yoga practice space, we start with a brief assessment of our bodies.

Eischen’s yoga begins with some simple postures to mobilize the joints and bring blood flow to our tissues as well as activate certain muscle groups that are necessary to hold a posture. His flow begins with the general quadruped pose progressing to a standing “mountain pose” and all of the fundamental yoga postures such as warrior poses and chaturanga flow. These are restorative postures that can be held for long enough periods of time to where you are in a meditative state allowing the specific cells and tissues needed to adjust.

Each yoga posture can always be altered to what your body needs that day and should be regressed to what is safe and healthy, completely avoiding pain and discomfort. Eischen’s progressions have the full gamut of restorative techniques and are all ancient yoga practice postures that encourage the entire spine, the shoulder blades, hips, knees, ankles, feet, elbows, and wrists to reset and receive good oxygenated blood.

When you put your body through that kind of a flow, you are rinsing out toxins from your organs and glands. Flowing through basic yoga progressions also opens up dormant neuro-pathways and promotes a healthier connection for your synapses helping out the entire sympathetic nervous system.

Every single person on this earth can benefit from a simple regression of these basic yoga fundamentals in one way or another. Whether it is mental clarity and a state of calmness that you receive from an elementary yoga flow, or that you breathe and explore how your body responds to certain healthy postures and benefit mechanically from unlocking certain movements in your body, we can all use it. I strongly encourage anyone and everyone, especially the more sedentary population all the way through to the highly active population to incorporate yoga in their weekly activities.

Ready to experience Eischen’s yoga, fundamental yoga, and additional recovery poses?

A Life Hack: Rest More to Accomplish More

August 23, 2015 by Jessica Leave a Comment

By Aubrie Pohl

You can feel the combination of motivation and your vision magnetizing you, pulling you toward your goal just as it is being drawn towards you.

You create a schedule, and set intention to the tasks you will accomplish to reach that goal.

Every day, you take the right steps in the right direction.

Training more, moving more, you feel the diligent effort adding up, allowing you to move better, look better, and feel better.

Then suddenly, fatigue sets in.

Your muscles grow weary, your mind becomes dull and you become perplexed about what happened.

Despite valiant effort to reach your greatest potential, the wisdom of your body was gently reminding you that you need to rest.

Put the Pep Back in your Step

In our lives we are often on the run and may not notice when our energy becomes drained.

Keeping your inner vision focused and following the path towards it undoubtedly displays integrity, but it can’t be sustained unless you nurture yourself.

If we go beyond our limits, we actually use more energy than we have and, essentially, operate on a deficit.

By using just a couple techniques for rest, we access powerful tools for revitalizing our bodies.

Stress Won’t Let You Rest!

Stress is one of the most debilitating and widespread conditions present in the world.

In fact, it is so common that we think it is normal.

Within the elaborate system of our bodies, our stress response evolved and developed as a survival mechanism during life-threatening situations.

However, nowadays humans are getting stressed about EVERYTHING.

Manifesting justifications to get stressed about situations or experiences, stress can hold you back in all aspects of life.

The body responds by slowing down digestion, suppressing the immune system, and causing a ruckus in the system, which will definitely prevent you from rest!

There’s good news!

The stress we commonly see is a fallacy, it is an irrational feeling, and you can manage stress into a tool that makes you stronger.

You can reduce the stress you experience through mindfulness of your thoughts and feelings, knowing that at any moment you are capable of relaxing.

Learning methods such as yoga and meditation will allow you to master your emotions and improve stress handling abilities.

[By the way, I teach yoga at Innovative Results! Tuesday & Wednesday at 11am, Thursday & Friday at 8pm :)]

Every individual is different, but finding a method to liberate from stress will in turn allow you to experience the rest you need.

Essential Slumber

When our lives become busy, sleep tends to be one of the first things we sacrifice.

We get caught up in the idea that by doing more we will get more done, so we stay up later and sleep less.

Decreasing an hour or two of slumber so we can increase our task list, and then we increase our caffeine intake to manipulate the body’s energy levels.

However, it is during sleep where the body revitalizes itself.

Sleep is as vital to sustaining a healthy, energetic life as eating, drinking, and breathing!

A night of ample sleep is a potent energizer, fostering a healthy body and a vibrant mind.

On the contrary, a lack of sleep creates a sluggish body and a foggy mind.

Give yourself the gift of a restful night and experience yourself feeling more refreshed, attentive, and ready for life’s challenges so you can live your full potential.

Knowing when to rest is as important as the work we do.

Today by seeking rest, you can rejuvenate yourself and improve your quality of life.

Learn How To Achieve Success With These Three Attitude Principles From Innovative Results Fitness Coach Aubrie Pohl

July 5, 2015 by Jessica 1 Comment

By Aubrie PohlGym in orange county

The elaborate structure of the human mind yields one of the greatest imaginable catalysts to SUCCESS.

Learn How To Achieve Success With These Three Principles of Attitude:

  1. Positive Thinking – A Positive Mental Attitude
  2. Positive Words – What You Say Matters
  3. Positive Action – It is Your Move

An essential step you can take towards achieving your greatest potential is being mindful of your ATTITUDE. A mastermind of your cognition, attitude shapes the way you perceive the world and the way the world perceives you.

It directly impacts our communication, contribution, and performance on a daily basis. Developing a high level of attitude awareness creates the ability to shape your world and mind into any desired result!

A positive attitude is intentional, and if you can think, speak, and act consistently in this way, you will change the way you feel inside and elevate your life to one of happiness, compassion, and opportunity.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKINGnoel jimenez, Aaron Guyett, Aaron Lieberman, Innovative Results, ORange County fitness playground

Our febrile human minds create an incessant flow of thoughts.

Positive thinking begins within that endless chatter of unspoken thoughts within our brain, called self-talk.

By nature we experience both positive and negative thoughts, so to say we should always think positively is unrealistic. However, embracing the right ATTITUDE can transform a negative notion into a positive one.

Through dominating our internal battle with beneficial thoughts, such as less self-criticism and more self-acceptance, we have the ability to rewire our brain.

The brain strengthens neural connections that are used and weakens ones that aren’t.

Adopting a new habit of positive thinking will slowly shift your brain into a positivity producing engine! This will generate advantageous effects both within your body and in your life.

Negative thinking can wreak havoc in the system by igniting stress responses, as well as narrow your mind to focusing on negative emotions. On the contrary, positive thinking can open your mind to the vast array of opportunities in our world, and will greatly reduce the harmful health effects of stress on the body.

Positive thoughts help build skills and produce an enhanced ability to handle stress in a more constructive way, and encouraging self-talk can convert any obstacle into an opportunity for growth and courage.

By rewiring the brain to create an endless flow of primarily positive thoughts, the forthcoming words and actions will be equally fruitful.

WHAT YOU SAY MATTERSracked carry, INnovative REsults, attitude, positive thoughts, positive words, positive actions

Words are tools that we have always had access to and have used every day since we started verbally communicating; they allow us to connect with each other and give meaning to our experiences. Consequently, they can have a profound impact upon ourselves and the people around us.

What you say, and how you say it, can be important and even life changing in the view of someone else.

Words have a biochemical effect on the body, and by introducing positive words into our vocabulary, we can change the pattern of our feelings and create joyful experiences!

Essentially, the words we attach to our experience will transform our perception.

We literally have the ability to turn a monotonous task into an exciting activity by simply choosing to use positive words.

Try this! The next time someone asks you, “How are you?”… instead of saying “good”, try “fantastic” or “awesome!” and notice how it affects your attitude.

Through positively orchestrating our speech, we can spark change to guide ourselves to action and improve the quality of our lives.

IT’S YOUR MOVE

Instilling our actions in forward momentum will allow us to continue on a path of self-transformation and success.

Mindfully build good habits, pursue goals, endeavor to live the life you have imagined and you can confidently move in the direction of your highest potential! By taking the right steps in the right direction, positive actions become intentional activities that manifest more motivation, happiness, and improved life conditions.

The inevitable negative moments in life will occur, but with a positive attitude we can accept those moments as opportunities to take positive action and reach a new high.

In fact, a change of behavior can alter how we think and feel.

Our emotions are reinforced by their matching expression, so even our poses and demeanor have the potential to change the chemical make-up of our bodies.

Smile and you will feel happier!

Stand tall with your chest out and you will assert confidence.

With a little polish of our ATTITUDE, we can change our actions and reactions, continually discovering maneuvers we can perform to make our lives more meaningful and satisfying.

A positive attitude starts from within, and monitoring the internal dialogue will effectively influence your relationship with yourself and your relationships with others.

Focusing your mind on how to be positive will reveal more ways to be so.

As we communicate with this transformational vocabulary, we radiate our positivity to others in hopes of redirecting possible negative words they harbor.

Meet the newest member of our IR Team, and YOUR IR Yoga Instructor, Aubrie Pohl!

A profound self-transformation begins to conjure from within when we take diligent action towards our bodies’ health. We learn that it goes beyond stretching or performing exercises, goes deeper than the external aesthetics. These movements manifest an internal cultivation, a commitment to improve our quality of life. Through Innovative Results and yoga, we experience the external and anatomical effects, as well as internal physiological and psychological effect of the trainings and practice. Yoga is a powerful tool to liberate us from where we are restricted- in body, mind, and heart- to experience life in the most organic and whole way. How do we find such great transformation in what may look like moving the body into unusual positions? By experiencing life with a deeper awareness. We introduce mindfulness into our lives; the active participation of every movement, every thought. We steady our breath to steady our thoughts, and feel the sensations throughout our body. Yoga moves the human body in a detailed manner to create movement in the fascia, length in the muscles, and balance. We experience balance between joint stability and mobility, between muscle contraction and relaxation, and balance between the left and right sides of the body. Once we start to create that balance inside the body, by default, we create that balance outside the body. The path of yoga goes beyond the physical postures, its a chance to meet your body where it is each day without judgment, to take the right steps in the right direction. We learn to embrace the flow of progress and focus on enjoying each experience as part of the bigger journey.

Every person is unique, and due to our individual anatomy and physiological history, different movements compliment the different skeletal variations. Innovative Results and yoga introduce a progressive structure, accessible at any level, and appealing to anyone with a desire to improve the quality of their life. They are movement systems designed to help people improve strength, flexibility, coordination, mobility, and body control. Through a playful exploration of movement available in the human system we create an intimate relationship with ourselves. Every posture or exercise is an opportunity to grow a deep level of awareness throughout your body, to feel the mind to muscle connection. The more you scan your body, the better you will become at it, and you can start to recognize when something is out of balance. If any muscle is weak or tight it will affect the body segment to which they connect. Each joint is related to other joints and if one has a problem operating its functions, this will affect the functions of adjacent joints. At Innovative Results and during Yoga practice, we touch the entire body from the head to the foot, from the right to the left, without leaving any part out. The reason we emphasize movement exploration, strength, mobility, and body control is for the application to daily activities. If there is fascial restriction in the shoulders, you’ll have a difficult time reaching overhead to get something from a shelf. If you aren’t flexible enough to touch your toes, it will be difficult to bend down and tie your shoes. By progressively moving through our optimal range of motion and with patience to take one step at a time, we will create a foundation that can positively affect our health, prevent injuries, and heal our bodies. Innovative Results and yoga greatly compliment each other, adding strength to stretch and stretch to strength, allowing us to look better, feel better, and move better to reach our potential greatness.yoga

11 Breathing Techniques That Help Reduce Stress, Calm Your Mind and Relax Your Body

January 22, 2014 by ptpt 4 Comments

breathing techniquesWe all lead pretty busy lives.  Early mornings, late nights, work, stress, activities and more.  Most of us try to suck it up and deal with it, but stress can takes its toll, if we’re not careful.  The typical reaction to a long day is plopping down on the couch and having a drink, but that doesn’t help us cope.  A better way to counter all that stress, is to meditate or implement some simple breathing techniques.  The good news is, you can do it at your desk, in the car, at home, in a park, at the beach or just about anywhere.

Below are some great resources that we gathered up for you to use as a resource.  Read the articles, practice different techniques and find one that works best for you.

  1. Deep Breathing – Deep breathing is the cornerstone of many other relaxation practices, too, and can be combined with other relaxing elements such as aromatherapy and music. All you really need is a few minutes and a place to stretch out.
  2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation – To nix tension from head to toe, close the eyes and focus on tensing and relaxing each muscle group for two to three seconds each.
  3. Body Scan Meditation – A body scan is similar to progressive muscle relaxation except, instead of tensing and relaxing muscles, you simply focus on the sensations in each part of your body.
  4. Mindfulness – Mindfulness is the ability to remain aware of how you’re feeling right now, your “moment-to-moment” experience—both internal and external. Thinking about the past—blaming and judging yourself—or worrying about the future can often lead to a degree of stress that is overwhelming. But by staying calm and focused in the present moment, you can bring your nervous system back into balance. Mindfulness can be applied to activities such as walking, exercising, eating, or meditation.
  5. Visualization – Close your eyes and let your worries drift away. Imagine your restful place. Picture it as vividly as you can—everything you can see, hear, smell, and feel. Visualization works best if you incorporate as many sensory details as possible, using at least three of your senses. When visualizing, choose imagery that appeals to you; don’t select images because someone else suggests them, or because you think they should be appealing. Let your own images come up and work for you.
  6. Equal Breathing – Balance can do a body good, beginning with the breath. To start, inhale for a count of four, then exhale for a count of four — all through the nose, which adds a natural resistance to the breath.
  7. Belly Breathing – With one hand on the chest and the other on the belly, take a deep breath in through the nose, ensuring the diaphragm (not the chest) inflates with enough air to create a stretch in the lungs.
  8. Alternate Nostril Breathing – A yogi’s best friend, this breath is said to bring calm and balance, and unite the right and left sides of the brain. Starting in a comfortable meditative pose, hold the right thumb over the right nostril and inhale deeply through the left nostril. At the peak of inhalation, close off the left nostril with the ring finger, then exhale through the right nostril.
  9. Guided Visualization – With a coach, therapist or helpful recording as your guide, breathe deeply while focusing on pleasant, positive images to replace any negative thoughts.
  10. Coherent Breathing – Coherent breathing is basically breathing at a rate of five breaths per minute, which is the middle of the resonant breathing rate range. I achieve this if I count to five inhaling and count to five exhaling.
  11. Resistance Breathing – Resistance breathing is exactly what its name suggests: breathing that creates resistance to the flow of air.  Resistance can be created by pursing the lips, placing the tip of the tongue against the inside of the upper teeth, hissing through the clenched teeth, tightening the throat muscles, partly closing the glottis, narrowing the space between the vocal cords, or using an external object such as breathing through a straw.

Stress can be a killer, but taking the time to practice these techniques can help calm your mind and body, making you healthier, more productive and energetic.  Try them out and let us know which one you find most beneficial.
