Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Chris Todd Griffiths. I’m an event, and Studio photographer.
Describe your product/service in 1-3 sentences.
I spend my time photographing everything from lavish weddings to newborn portraits, in my studio. Last year we expanded a new business into photographing corporate events, and executive profile shots. We also photograph products as well.
How did you get started in that industry?
I was hooked in Jr. High the very first time I made a print in the darkroom. I still remember being so excited when the image I shot started appearing on the photo paper. It Still gives me chills.
What were some of the main tipping points (if any) or a-ha moments? How did the tipping points happen?
2 points for me. 1st was design school. My photographic eye, and vision was changed dramatically by my experience there.
What were your biggest mistakes, or biggest wastes of time / money?
Trying to re-invent everything myself, and working in a bubble. And OH the $$$. Photo gear is pricey. Gotta do the research, and as the question, Do I NEED or just WANT this? before opening the wallet on new gear.
Key manufacturing and marketing lessons learned?
Referral is always best.
Any PR wins? Media, well-known users, or company partnerships, etc? How did they happen?
My most prized accomplishment is winning a brides choice award 3 times. I never solicit my clients to vote for me in contests. Winning has caught me by surprise every time.
I’ve been lucky to get the opportunity to partner with many great companies for photography projects like, Hope depot, Olive garden, JP Morgan, not sure if they still exist. lol was starting to travel and see the world..and all the photographic opportunities in it!
What software/tools and resources, mentors or groups did you find useful for growing, if any?
I love my local Photography Trade organization. Also had an amazing mentor when I was a newbie. We still bounce ideas off each other every week. It’s been a quick 15 years.
If you were to do it all over again, what would you do differently?
I’d go strait for the jugular. lol
Any other advice to people starting their first business?
Be prepared to struggle. Measure twice cut once. Learn from your mistakes. A good attitude goes a long way. Seize opportunity, if none exists. Create opportunity. Ok I’ll stop.
What’s next?
More photography of course. Also Hiring, training, and systematizing everything in my mind into a manual. Also thinking about leading seminars.
