Our society thrives of competition. A winning mindset, a will to win, and winning work are all part and parcel to Championships and Champions, whether we are talking about sports, fitness, business, and every other venture in life. At the Orange County Fitness Playground, we want to open the discussion on winning, winners, and what it takes to win. Is it good? Is it bad? What makes a winner tick? How do you develop a winning attitude? The questions are endless.
First off, I would just like to say that I am no expert on winning. I am a student of successful people and continue to learn everyday. I created this article in hopes that it would become a discussion. Below are some of my thoughts and some quotes from from winners. I hope you enjoy them and look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comment section below.
What does it take to win?
Skill – Whether you are an athlete or a business owner, you must develop a basic set of skills. An understanding of the marketplace, a mastery of a certain skill set or other skills that allow you to perform better than the competition. This may seem basic, but it may take years of consistent effort to develop this skill set. Once you start, never quit.

Talent – Everyone is different and has unique gifts that allow them to perform well at different tasks, sports or jobs. Learning your strengths can help you learn your needed skills more efficiently.
“A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.”
Passion – I truly believe that you must love what you do if you want to compete at a high level. There must be a deep seeded passion for winning at your chosen venture. Without it, you will get sidetracked or thrown off course too easily.
“Winning is not a sometime thing, it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”
Consistency – Experts say that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert on a subject. Developing a consistent work habit will allow you to gather information, practice, compete and continuously improve. Consistency over time will create momentum, which can make the journey quicker and more powerful.

Will – Your journey will never go as planned. There will always be challenges and set backs. This is not negative, but can be discouraging. Having the will to fight thru challenges will separate you from 99% of your competition. This is sometimes easier said than done, but critical for your success in any venture.

Support – I don’t believe in self made men. People are strong, but a team of people is always stronger. Having the support of a good team is vital for creating major success. Think about all the people that have helped you over the years. It may be as simple as an introduction or as intense as personally coaching you through an area of your life. Be thankful for those who have helped you along the way. You wouldn’t be where you are without them.
I asked about 20 pro mma fighters, who train at the gym, what they thought created a win. Here are their thoughts:

“A belief that, no matter what happens, you will come out on top. You have to brainwash yourself by constantly telling yourself that no matter how much better someone is at something than you, that you are better at winning than them. I beat plenty of guys that are better in every aspect of the sport than me, but I convinced myself that I’m better at winning. Trick yourself into believing that you can’t be beat.”
