How to Determine the Right Kettlebell

November 3, 2017 by Jessica 5 Comments

Article By Kettlebell Kings

Kettlebells are one of the most versatile exercise tools that a person can employ. They take minimal space but deliver maximum benefit to your workouts.

One of the hardest choices a new-comer to the kettlebell culture encounters is what style of kettlebell they should buy for themselves and start training with. There are quite a few different styles and shapes to kettlebells their weight aside.

The first thing to consider when choosing a kettlebell is what are your goals with procuring a kettlebell?

– Is it going to be a household exercise tool or be used outside?
– Is it for building strength or more conditioning focused?
– Will you eventually want to use single hand work or will you be mostly focused on using two handed grip techniques?

Let’s knock down these one at a time:

1. There are some Kettlebell styles that have a plastic coating to make them more conducive for inside use – For outdoor use there are powder coated kettlebells that make them more resilient to the ele-ments. I personally like the powder coated for inside and outside use.

2. To be clear ANY kettlebell training will have strength benefits, but if you are more conditioning focused then you will want a weight that you can move around with some general ease so you can focus on the exercise techniques. The different weights of kettles (other competition kettlebells which stay the same dimensions no matter the weight) will change is size as the weights change and this can effect your techniques. *A tip to consider – Regardless of style of training I do recommend using Sport style kettles due to their consistent size and shape. This will allow the movements you learn to stay the same as you progress in weight if you so choose.

3. Most kettlebell techniques can be done with two hands. This makes them more stable and easy to learn for novices. Using single hand techniques will rise the challenge and technique level considerably. If you do not seeing yourself wanting to try single hand work for some time then you will be using two hand movements so you will want to have a kettlebell with ample handle space. A solid unique design that has a consistent size and shape, like Sport style kettlebells, but also have a decent size handle shape like the powder coat kettlebells are the Kettlebell Kings Steel Standard Kettlebells.

Now that you have determined your goals with kettlebell it is time to determine the proper weight.

Quality kettlebells do cost money so you have to make sure when you make the investment that it is going to be the right weight for your goals. Of course as you increase your strength and technique you will eventually need to go up in weight. but this could take some time; so you can get a lot of mileage off of the right kettlebell.

Of course this is a difficult choice to determine since there are many variables involved. Injuries, experience, current fitness level, etc. In most kettlebell training styles 8 kilogram (about 17 lbs) and 12 kilogram (about 25 lbs) are the classic starting weights. Usually, especially for two hand movements, the 12 kilo size bells are a great novice challenge. If you have some kettlebell or weight resistance experience then the 16 kilogram (about 35 lbs) is a standard starting point.

A good guide to also help determine a proper weight is by possible rep ranges you will be pre-forming in your routine. Most coaches use a classic guideline of:
• 1-3 reps for explosive power
• 3-5 reps for strength
• 5-8 for sustained strength
• 8-12 for muscle hypertrophy
• 12+ reps for power endurance

If with the weight you choose you can do 12 or more reps with the 12kg kettlebell in one move, lets say the goblet squat, at once with relative ease it may be too light for you in that exercise and you may need the 16kg. You can use this example for all the exercises you may be planning on doing.

It is important to consider your current level of fitness, but also know you WILL get stronger and also consider. With proper training and consistency you may be surprised how much stronger with your kettlebell you will become.

Hopefully this easy checklist will help you determine what kind of kettlebell is the right one for you. It is always exciting to get a new kettlebell, it is like getting a new workout buddy who is ready to help you create the strongest version of yourself.

If you can, and you are a kettlebell novice, seek out some professional coaching to learn the basics for you to build on. Sometimes in person is tough, if so then look for a good coach who offers online coaching. If this is also out of reach then subscribe to the Kettlebell Kings blog, and YouTube content for kettlebell technique videos and articles and weekly kettlebell workouts to add to your fitness routine.

Innovative Results’ Training Program Helps Manny Recover from Injury

October 18, 2017 by Jessica 5 Comments

Since starting with Innovative Results back in Fall 2014, Manny Aragon has not stopped being an inspiration. Starting as a client, Manny is now a couple months into his IR3 internship/mentoring program with Innovative Results as well.

After taking HUGE physical strides, Manny wanted to develop his mindset to not only assist during his workouts, but to help himself create an improved quality of life at work, and with his family.

For more on Manny’s fitness and improved quality of life journey, we highly recommend reading his triumphant stories from start to present!

June 24, 2016 – “I am doing something that I NEVER expected to be doing..”

April 4, 2017 – Innovative Results Kettlebell Sport Competitor, Manny Aragon Shares His Story

Now on to the present!

——

Testimonial for Innovative Results – Injury healed through training.

Name: Manny Aragon

Came to IR: Fall 2014

Joined IR Kettlebell Sport Team: Fall 2015

Earlier this year and coming off of WAKSC World Championships of Kettlebell Sport Lifting, subsequent week of Kettlebell Sport certification with 4 multiple time world champion lifters, and then an intense 3 month Kettlebell Sport snatch training program in an attempt to attain CMS (candidate master of sport) rank in Kettlebell Sport, I was feeling very strong.

It was with this feeling that I jumped headfirst into a demo obstacle course class during which I fell from the monkey bars, landed on my outstretched arm, partially tore three ligaments in my elbow and got a subcortical (crush) fracture on the back of the elbow from hyperextending upon impact. Needless to say, I completed the course after the injury (as I was very warmed up) except for the parallel bars as they require the arms to be straight- a position which felt quite bad as you can imagine.

I wasn’t thinking straight after the injury so I went straight home to get my kids (who were with me) some lunch. After lunch the arm began to swell considerably and the pain and stiffness set in. Luckily, I am a body worker by trade and work in a great sports medicine clinic- I have many resources available to me. That day, though, by the time I had gotten home and gotten my kids and myself something to eat, the clinic was closed until Monday. I thought at that point that my elbow may be dislocated, fractured, or possibly broken. I rubbed liniment into the tissue and did some myofascial work to ease the tension in the now seized up muscles.

Later that night my wife (an acupuncturist) gave me an acupuncture treatment using the orthopedic method she had been trained in by one of her mentors. All told I had 7 treatments in the first 3 weeks and one a week since then (now at 7 weeks out). X-Ray of the elbow showed no major fractures but likely a bad sprain. At 3 weeks, an MRI recommended by a colleague showed 3 partially torn ligaments (one low grade, one medium grade, one high grade) and a subcortical (crush) fracture at the articulation of the ulna with the humerous.

The recommended treatment from both my sports med docs as well as the orthopedist who was consulted was acupuncture (thank GOD I live with one). Needless to say- I was back in the gym two days after the injury- No kettlebell sport training (as I couldn’t push rapid force through the unstable injury) but I focused instead on attending the regular IR progression. I went 5-6 days a week, sometimes doing doubles (as my elbow and schedule allowed) while doing the physical requirements of the IR internship program (challenging).

The key here and I believe the fundamental reason why I have healed so quickly is that I made sure that I moved as naturally as possible within the range of motion and load range high enough to produce adaptation and drive recovery but not so much that I re-injured the joint.

This is a serious injury. I was expected to be completely off of Kettlebell Sport training for months if not an entire season. The take home message: Natural movement heals. A good diet, adequate rest, and being married to an acupuncturist don’t hurt either.

At the end of 5 weeks I began to swing a very light kettle bell to further drive healing and re learn the range of motion in the kettlebell sport snatch. I slowly increased the weight during week 5 and 6. By the middle of week 6 I snatched my full competition weight. This week, week 7, I am working with just shy of my competition weight. I will slowly increase the weight after a few weeks as my arm fully heals. I still cant fully straighten my arm or fully bend it but my range of motion is improving slowly with use during both the IR workouts as well as with the kettlebell workouts.

Thank you to the IR staff, my wife, my doctors, and to Matt who brought bone broth for me to speed the healing process. Special thanks to Aubrie for inspiring me to take this route after watching her quick recovery post shoulder dislocation earlier this year.

Join Manny and the Innovative Results Family this Saturday, October 21st for the 8th Annual International Charity Event – The One Hour Long Cycle (1HLC). This year’s event aims to raise awareness, support and donations for Walk with Sally.

The 4th Annual California Open Kettlebell Championship

March 8, 2016 by IR Staff Leave a Comment

Just when you think it can’t get any better, this year’s competition was even better than last year’s and the year before!

Here are the FOUR HUGE reasons why it was even better:

12799462_10153865816056427_1039661624954361145_n12717967_10153865816011427_235147024042309624_nFirst, due to the heart-breaking news that our kettle-brother Philip Gutierrez passed the day before the competition, on Friday the 26th of February 2016, this Cali Open memorialized, celebrated, and became a lift for Phil and his family and friends. With a black sash draped above and the platforms every lifter felt the spiritual presence of an incredible man of God, and mentor to many. The Lobue family was closest to this man and his incredible legacy, and they came down from Central California to represent for Phil. An amazing moment of silence followed by an empty platform with a single chalked bell sitting on the platform, represented Phil, while the entire audience paid respect to this man for a full ten minute set started this incredible day of firsts. The weekend ended with donations, prayers, and respects paid to man of great character, Philip Gutierrez.

Second, a huge showing from our lady lifters, with over 50 females lifting double bells! This is the first WAKSC kettlebell sport competition where women and girls lifted two kettlebells instead of just one. They proved any of the naysayers wrong with their incredible results in Jerk and Long Cycle, many lifting more reps than most male lifters, lifting the same weights. Notably, Kimberly Fox set an Absolute Record in Long Cycle with two 24 kg kettlebells by driving forward to 61 reps like the professional she is. This enabled her to achieve Master of Sport International Class according to Ketacademy Ranking Standards (the Competitive Rules and Ranking Standards of the World Association of Kettlebell Sport Clubs). Some of the other incredible women of the day were: Brittany van Schravendijk of KOR Strength and Conditioning Kettlebell Club lifting two 16kg Long Cycle for 103 reps; Mia Lobue of Girevik Gear Club lifting two 4kg Long Cycle for 79 reps (she is 6 years old); Chelsey Marr of Texas Kettlebell Academy lifting two 28kg Long Cycle for 26 reps, and so many others! Check out the video below to see the greatest flight of the day!

Third, over 150 lifters from all over the nation and World united to lift kettlebells and embrace friendships past and present. Again, the California Open Kettlebell Championship proved to be a World contender for most attended kettlebell sport competition. With lifters flying into Costa Mesa, California’s very own Innovative Results (IR), to lift in Orange Kettlebell Club‘s (OKC) greatest kettlebell sport championship for the fourth year in a row. John “Wild” Buckley, Nazo, and Jason Dolby proved to the World of Kettlebell Sport lifters that they will offer a well-organized competition, under the sanctions of World Association of Kettlebell Sport Clubs (WAKSC) within the rules and rankings of Ketacademy, and deliver above-and-beyond in uniting this sport with friendship, love, and passion! With Denis’s hugs, Rachinski’s heart, and and the OKC Chu (or Spirit). this event over-delivered again to all lifters and observers both in-person and online with a flawless livestream of every lift of both days. Being a part of the WAKSC Grand Prix, this event is sure to get better every year.

12795161_10207432729195328_3327160074607154356_o

Fourth, next year’s California Open Kettlebell Championship will be home to the Kettlebell Sport World Championship! Taking the place of other smaller and less organized World Championships, this World Championship is the place to be if you are looking to be recognized in Kettlebell Sport. Organized by Orange Kettlebell Club; Rules and Rankings by Ketacademy; Sanctioned be the World Association of Kettlebell Sport Clubs; this World Championship is putting Kettlebell Clubs first, and sharing the power of this sport with the entire World. The event is already blowing up on Facebook, and is sure to attract even more lifters, clubs, and nations as the year progresses. Set to happen at none other than Innovative Results, this four day event starting on February 23, 2017 is sure to bring hundreds of lifters together, proving the power of kettlebell clubs through a well-organized, insanely fun, and passionately competitive championship!!

Just a fraction of the clubs representing in 2017 World Kettlebell Sport Championship.

Whether you are a kettlebell lifter or are interested in this fast growing sport, you have an opportunity to attend another ground-breaking, record-smashing, and World-uniting event this coming year. Place this event on your calendar and don’t miss the best kettlebell sport event of the year!

With Kettlebell Sport (Girevoy Sport) quickly on the rise to mainstream popularity, the Innovative Results Team and Family is making their presence known from the very beginning!

As the host for The California Open Kettlebell Sport Lifting Championship, OC’s Fitness Playground has become a destination for competitors across the globe bringing in people from all over the United States, Russia, Brazil, Australia, and Japan (just to name a few).

So, just how does Orange County’s very own lifters hold up against the competition? I’d say they’ve fared pretty dang well, check it out!

After claiming the American Record in Men’s Amateur Biathlon in 2014, IR owner Aaron Guyett took on Men’s Professional Long Cycle at the 2015 California Open yielding 53 reps with 32kg kettlbells. This showing tallied Aaron  as the highest USA coefficient lifter sending him on the road the the IUKL World Championship in Ireland this November, but first, CHICAGO.

Aaron Guyett's Winnings from Nationals

Just last month (July 2015), Aaron traveled to Nationals in Chicago to punch his ticket to the IUKL World Championship. Returning to Biathlon in the Men’s Professional Division, Aaron took 1st in the 85kg weight category with 32kg bells, earning him a place on Team USA and the opportunity to compete at Worlds’ in Dublin, Ireland (November 2015).

The week after Aaron’s return from Chicago, 5 members of IR’s Kettlebell Crew headed up north to take their platforms at the 2015 Northern California Open. Let’s see how they did!

Is Kettlebell Training For Me?

April 16, 2014 by ptpt 3 Comments

Kettlebell Swing

Yes!

Resurging as one of the HOTTEST fitness trends, the century old kettlebell has proven itself to be one of the #1 workouts for burning calories, and reducing body fat.

According to the American Council of Exercise, kettlebell workouts can burn up to 20 calories/min, that is like running a 6 minute mile! The only other exercise that comes close to that number is cross-country skiing.

What is a Kettlebell Workout?

Kettlebells are more than a substitution for traditional free weights. Giveroy (kettlebell) Sport is actually 3 lifts; Jerk, Snatch, and Long Cycle. The BEST part is that all three lifts can be broken down/isolated to their simplest form of kettlebell movement and you will still get RESULTS.

A Few Benefits of Kettlebell Training:

Increased Strength without Increased mass (no bulk) Increased Core/Abdominal Strength

Increased Resistance to Injury

Decreased Body Fat

Increased Muscular Stability

Decreased Neck, Shoulder & Lower Back Pain (Postural Ailments)

Work Aerobic & Anaerobic Simultaneously

Increased Mobility

Improved Posture

Optimize Caloric Burn Increased Muscular Endurance

Increased Lean Muscle

Keri Cali Open Females

There are very few workouts, or pieces of fitness equipment that can deliver not only a strength workout, but have the potential for high-intensity cardiovascular activity & mobility training. By combining weight with our body’s natural movements (tossing, pulling, lifting, carrying), kettlebells allow for a functional performance resulting in practical & dramatic increases in our endurance and strength. Commonly known as the “Full Body Fit!”

Ready to get started!?

Though kettlebells are extremely versatile when it comes to combining them in your workouts, safe and effective body mechanics are crucial when preventing injury. Unless you are using kettlebells as a replacement for traditional free weights, we do not recommend learning the basics from DVDs or Youtube, and highly recommend that you seek out a coach/trainer with experience in kettlebell sport.

Orange County’s Fitness Playground & Orange Kettlebell Club is set to host OKC’s Level 1 Kettlebell Sport Certification in November 2016!

This workshop is perfect for the beginner looking to get into kettlebell sport, and the kettlebell sport athlete looking to gain an edge in competition.

Jason Dolby is a Kettlebell Sport Athlete and OKC Master Coach with over 14 years of experience in the world of Kettlebell Sport. Coach Dolby has traveled around the world increasing his knowledge and practice of the sport from World Record holders, coaches and fellow athletes.

Aaron Guyett is a Master of Sport in all lifts Jerk, Snatch, and Long Cycle, competing on the World stage as a professional, as well as setting several national records (including first American to achieve Master of Sport in Biathlon and Long Cycle at one competition).

3 things I learned from Kettlebell Competition

September 17, 2013 by ptpt Leave a Comment

Dave and Aaron Kettle picFrom David, a Long Time Innovative Results Client and Friend:
Three things I learned from the competition:

1.  Have a plan and stick to it.
It sounds obvious… but it’s never been obvious to me.
Whenever I’ve run a 10k or played in a soccer game or whatever, I’ve tended to “wing it”. Sticking with the 9 reps every 30 seconds allowed me to last the entire 10 minutes and do well.

2.  Consistency and dedication pay off.
Again, obvious.
But true.

3.  For me the biggest victory has been overcoming my left shoulder injury.
My torn anterior deltoid has given me problems for over 2 years.
It’s taken a LOT of band work, stretching, rehab, and dedication to get past it.
Being able to do 5 solid minutes of 16kg kettle on my left arm was huge for me and has given me a lot of confidence.
Kettlebell Swing
Dave’s Story From the Coaches Viewpoint
When David came to me with a shoulder injury, I trained him for a while, and then he became interested in some kettlebell movements.
I will be honest, I was probably more apprehensive than he was about the potential strain to his recently torn shoulder.
He could hardly crawl, let alone lift a heavy kettlebell above his head.
I spent a lot of time coaching proper recovery, and allowing him to take small baby steps toward kettlebell work.
The day he could crawl backward pain free was a HUGE milestone for me to see.
Although he probably thought the inability to crawl backwards was just a hindrance, I knew he was leaps and bounds toward an overhead kettlebell lift.
We started small and arduously with single and double kettlebell lifts, and the large technicality of the lifts can be sort of awkward at first.
KettleCrewThrough good recovery techniques with dynamic warm-ups, mobility drills, SMR, and decent nutrition, Dave was able to get a 12 kg kettlebell over his head for a few minutes.
I remember he once told me, “I didn’t think I would ever be able to snatch heavy kettlebells, ever!”
Instead of concurring or disagreeing, I let good calculations and progressions take their proper place in his programming.
Before we knew it, Dave was snatching the 16 kg bells.
It wasn’t long after that he competed.
His first competition, February 2013, was a tough one.
He cut weight for the first time, and I found out Dave has a very grumpy edgy side (don’t we all when we are carb depleted and dehydrated).
He was also in his head way too much, but I was proud of him for stepping out on the platform, trying with the best of them.
crowded gym - kettle groupHe had a good first time showing of 71 reps in ten minutes (it probably didn’t help that his brand new girlfriend, Joanna was watching…talk about nerves!).
Through proper training, diligence, and programming Dave was able to step on the platform in August of 2013, he completed 172 reps in ten minutes during a training set–a 101 increase from his last competition.
glute exercises: kettlebell swingDave’s mind was focused, and whenever it wandered to hopes of hitting this number per minute, or this total number, I kindly reminded him to stick to the plan (there may have been a few times where it was more of a yell or a scold, but what do you expect when Dave gets paid to analyze a million different outcomes–he’s a statistician, literally has a doctorate in math).
Needless to say he blew the competition and his personal record (PR) away!!
With 186 reps in snatch, Dave stuck to the plan, overcame a debilitating injury, and bested his PR two weeks prior by 14 reps!
The greatest victory to me is his ability to stay with something, even when it seems hopeless at first.
kettlebell blurI am so proud of his diligence, consistency, loyalty, and hard work!
All of the kettlebell performances are emotional when you spend a ton of time training for it, and it is always nice when the emotion is excitement, happiness, and transformational!
Thank you, Dave, and I look forward to your continued success!!
