The Story of That Last Little Bit of Fat – Losing the Last Ten Pounds

February 23, 2016 by IR Staff 1 Comment

StressAaaarrgh!!

Why can’t the mirror just make it disappear?

And while I am talking about it, my pants would feel better without it, and don’t even get me started on how my shirts and blouses would fit without it.

When I step on the scale, it is still sitting there, reminding me of everything I don’t want to hear, see, or feel…

I have ten pounds of unwanted, undesirable, and un-removable body fat…I feel like I have tried everything, and it is still there, taunting me with its jiggly, bloated, bulging presence.

love handleHow do I lose the last little bit of fat?

This story has been told by all of us, and even though it feels like the last ten is stuck there forever, this does not have to be the story.

First, let me premise this story with the understanding that there is a necessary and healthy need for body fat, and it helps the male and female body look attractive. I am not here to help the person who is looking to starve and over-train every ounce of fat from their body.

I am here to help the person that truly has ten pounds (or more) of unnecessary body fat, which is doing more harm than good.

I am talking about the knee-pain-inducing, high-blood-pressure-raising,  heart-disease-increasing, depression-promoting, back-breaking ten or more pound of body fat.

We all see the shining light at the end of the tunnel. The shining light is where we have lost the ten pound baggage that has been weighing us down for too long, and now we are free to move, feel, and look amazing!

Fitness boot camp helps people get active

We know it is not going to be easy, and yet for some reason we want to hear someone tell us, “all you have to do, is keep doing what you have been doing, and it will gone.” or “Just do this one exercise for five minutes a day, and that little bit of fat will disappear before your eyes.”

Unfortunately, we all know this is not true, because we have been doing the same thing for (insert insanely long period of time here), and nothing has changed.

We also know that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing, and expecting a different results, yet it is so easy to keep doing our routine. Is that because we are creatures of habit? Yes.

What if we could make a slight change to our habits, and see a HUGE result?

enhanced-buzz-8548-1367336827-9Insert good news emoticon here, because we can!

Time after time at Innovative Results and throughout my time as a fitness trainer and fitness coach, I have seen the longest lasting, biggest transformations–especially with the “last ten pound club”–from those that stay dedicated to making small habit changes for good.

The three simple steps to lose the last ten pounds are record your nutrition intake (to include hydration), twenty minutes of relaxed, focused breathing, and show up consistently to an intelligent fitness training program.

Step 1 – Record Your Nutrition Intake, Which Includes Hydration

ir_3_nutrition_prepThis daily habit change, does not mean you have to go on a crazy diet, or fast with lemon-juice and ginger for forty days, or throw away everything in your kitchen, replacing it with fresh-picked hipster organic farm goodness.

Recording your nutrition is a way for you to teach yourself what you are eating.

Sounds dumb, but it is effective, which also means it is not dumb.

You would be surprised to hear that every single person I have asked to track their nutrition, has told me some rendition of, “Wow! I did not realize this juice had so much sugar in it.” or “Wow! A half a cup of rice seems so small on my plate.”

We live in America where convenience, incredible marketing, and big/more/bigger is the way of life, especially with food.

You can imagine how much help it is to add daily nutrition tracking of your food intake.

This small habit will completely change your life, and it is so easy to implement with smart phones and apps there is no excuse but to implement it today.

We recommend myfitnesspal, because it is simple, easy-to-use, and it is FREE! (we make zero money off of the promotion of this app and website)

Step 2 – Twenty Minutes of Relaxed, Focused Breathing

breathing techniquesThere are too many studies that recount the goodness and improvement that come from focused breathing, daily relaxation, prayer, and meditation, but I want to look at this time from a different perspective.

Think about this time as a reset button.

When your day is starting to choke you out, or last night’s lack of sleep refuses to be conquered by coffee, take twenty minutes to improve your mood, relax, de-stress, unwind, and focus on one thing, your breath, instead of the million things on your list.

If this turns into a twenty minute nap, than we know you probably needed more sleep anyway, which helps our metabolic and hormonal function.

If you keep thinking about all the things you need to do or want to do, bring a pad of paper, write it down and take care of it after your breathing time, and then refocus back on your breath.

This reset is crucial for your mindset during this time of change and renewed habits.

Every time you take twenty minutes to reset yourself mentally, you are also resetting yourself physically. Whatever mistakes you made or problems you had are now gone and in the past.

You are no longer weighed down by shame, guilt, or past habits.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life, and you have the opportunity to make a new you with a new day.

Step 3 – Show Up Consistently To an Intelligent Fitness Training Program

2016-01-12 10.11.51Showing up is the hardest part, especially if you have a million things on your list, or you don’t feel perfect, or you are feeling the darkness of the tunnel, not the shinyness of the light at the end of the tunnel.

Once you show up, all you have to do is join in the calculated exercise program, and you always feel better.

If the program is a smash-fest or it is variable and inconsistent, you probably won’t feel better, so don’t get sucked into these dark holes.

Seek out good coaching, encouraging environments, and tried and true methods for your exercise program and fitness training.

Whether it is one-on-one, group training, classes, or do-it-yourself exercise programs, make sure it is progressive, enjoyable, and helpful.

Progressive workouts build on themselves, instead of randomly putting together a bunch of exercises, and saying, “do it more and do it harder and do it more harder with intensity”…sounds weird, but because of our culture this is one of the biggest mistakes when trying to lose the last ten, because the stress of these workouts add to the stress of your day, and set your hormones up for fat-retaining failure.

Enjoyable workouts are going to be a personal choice, because where I see sweaty, disheveled mats with twisted figures hiding pain, many of you see a relieving, reviving, toxin-expelling, breath of fresh mobility, called hot-yoga.

Find something you enjoy, and stick to it long enough to build a deeper than paper relationship with the instructors and coaches that can only help you if they see you more than once or twice per month.

If we focus on these three areas as new, small habit adjustments, we will begin to see where our body and mind is most healthy in terms of body fat and lean body mass.

You will see that the ten pounds have melted away, and you have new lines, curves, jeans, shirts, and relationships that you never would have thought possible.

Your relationship with the mirror, scale, closet, pictures, and people have improved, along with your quality of life.

How IR Helped ME Improve My Human Potential

September 26, 2014 by ptpt 1 Comment

RVCA MECB CrewWhen IR Coach Aaron Guyett asked people how IR helped them improve their human potential, this is what they said:
Keri Guyett – Challenged me to train and complete level II Ropes Certification

Mark Elmasry – Healing People

Mason Murphy – Perform at my highest level.

Will Waggoner – Shown me I can become stronger than I am.

Mike Gordon – Fitness and Flexibility

Rob Hendrix – It taught me that I was capable of doing so much more than I believed. First it was with exercise, but then it spread to other areas of my life.

Dorothea Kalatschan – Continuing to grow in a healthy way, reaching new levels…spiritually, mentally, and physically!!!

Courtney Wesson – Push, support, and motivation.

Joe Stocker – I feel like the trainers at IR genuinely care about my health and helping me become strong without injury.

Tri Luu – You guys simply care. 🙂

Roger Swibold – Provided massive amounts of encouragement, and the personal, knowledgeable attentiveness to make sure I’m doing it right (no injuries)

Elan Sudberg – IR provides a professional and structured yet nimble and out of the box mechanism to take primates trapped in cubes back to their animal roots where survival was physical and mental. We are physical beings not far removed from the jungles from which we walked out of and require movement to keep our bodies and minds healthy. Bam!!

Bruce Swerdfeger – Placed me back on the road to health.

Angie Miner – Pushed me with encouragement.

Jessica Ciske – Prioritize life experiences.

Josh Linn – A positive focus on health.

Jeff Cannon – Core Strength.

Stacey Kaszton – Embracing the constant desire to grow and better, stronger and more like the perfect God that created us.

Whitney George – Gave me freedom of mind, body, and soul I haven’t felt in a while. That feeling “I can do anything” like an athlete training for competition. I feel stronger, leaner…minimal hip-flexor and back pain. But ultimately freedom to play.

Kelly Colvin – Teamwork and community

Shannon Meade – Different mindset.

Margaret Fajardo – IR has helped me with my mental game.IR Fam Weekend Shots

Catherine Yu – Organization, leadership, and accountability.

Torry Dechert – Made me a healthier, stronger mother!

Jennifer Carpio – Made me aware of my diet, counting calories…eating the RIGHT foods!

Joe Vanwormer – Hit the ball over the fence!

Charlton Bilow  -Confidence. Being physically fit has made me more confident in my leadership abilities.

Conner Moore – It’s a very accepting place. Lots of gyms make you feel like you have to measure up to the best, but IR is perfect for whatever level you are at. That and everyone there is so friendly.

Emma Quick – Mental fortitude and pushing past my perceived limits!

Lewis Van Der Wryd – Helped me stand up. Literally. My spine is much more aligned now.

Jessie Perez – IR made working out fun again. 🙂

Laurie Walker – The strength it’s given me–muscle and mind.

Josh’s Mental and Physical Transformation Will Astound You

August 19, 2014 by ptpt 5 Comments

Let the transformation begin!
Josh found his #1 motivator, and stopped waiting for tomorrow!

Regarding family, health and good looks…
comp2Josh Linn 1

I’ve spent a lot of time capitalizing on, recalling times and telling stories of my former health, habits, and good looks from my teens… my 20’s etc… A lot of stories and memories about the good ol days but that’s where it has stopped for years. Somehow in my head I had the notion I had “built up” enough health that it didn’t matter if I ate another bad meal or drank another weekend away because it was always just one more meal or day away and then I would get my act together, right? I became comfortable in my habits and habits are not comfortable for anyone to change. And for me, I really enjoy food. Big breakfasts, big lunches and big heavy dinners late at night… For years I stayed in that zone to the detriment of my current health. Over 15 years I went from 150 pounds to 265 pounds. It’s weird because it actually happened quite slowly, after all that’s not even 8 pounds per year when you think about it. But over the years it sure caught up.

I went from a size 30 waist to a size 38 fitting extremely tight and I had to buy a pair of size 40 shorts. Every couple years I crept up a shirt size, large, then XL then XXL. XXL stuff just doesn’t fit well no-matter how good looking you are… and those XXL’s were getting a little snug! In my head I was like crap, I am not going to buy XXXL shirts. I began snoring at night. I was winded doing smaller tasks like a flight of stairs. I started sweating a lot. I had to fold my knee out at a weird angle just to tie my shoes because my belly was in my way. I had previously had shoulder surgery a couple years back and it was starting to hurt each time I would push myself out of bed because of the shear amount of weight it was pushing. Speaking of that, I no longer sat up out of bed, I more-so rolled out of bed. At Disneyland I had to struggle a little to close the safety harness over myself on some of the rides with my daughter. The last few years less and less of the women I was attracted to weren’t attracted to me or returning my looks. I went to my doctor and had some blood work done. The tests came back and my Cholesterol(s) were high, Triglycerides were quite unhealthy at near 400, blood pressure was extremely high 150/100 and my doctor said that I should take blood pressure medicine if I don’t change something soon. Well I didn’t like the idea of taking blood pressure medicine when I could just make some changes so I told him no thanks. But then, I didn’t change anything.

All along my daughter (6 years old at this time) had been telling me since she was 3 that I need to eat healthier. When talking with me she would call me “fat-daddy” from time to time and at meals tell me I need to eat vegetables instead of pizza and burritos. Not in cruelty, but in the merciless honesty of a child who is just speaking the truth they know. Some adults would hear her say the fat-daddy thing and respond along the lines of “Paige, that is not nice…” or they’d feel pretty awkward for me and the situation. But I would explain to them that I was completely ok with her saying it to me (but not to others) because it is the truth and she wasn’t doing it to hurt my feelings. In my mind it is would be similar to Paige saying my hairline is receding. Besides, there is a part of me that uses that stuff for motivation. And like after talking with the doctor, I just didn’t have any plan or real intention of starting at the time. And I let day after day and year by year go by.

When you summarize it like this or certainly when someone else looks at you physically and sees you so out of shape… all of this is like “no duh”, Josh time to make some changes. But it sure is easier to do nothing about it and pretend that you will do something about it on the next meal or on Monday or… always banking that tomorrow is guaranteed. Back to my daughter… Well, I just flat out decided I want to be around for her until a ripe old age, that was my #1 motivating factor. Oh and I’d really like to meet an attractive and healthy lady to share my life with and to that end I need to start work on myself first.Josh Linn Collage

I saw a good friend of mine Will had posted a Facebook check-in at Innovative Results. I checked IR out and it soon became my favorite gym I have ever attended. I began going 3-4 times a week but I was still eating really heavy meals that counter-balanced all my working out –In my head I now had the notion I deserved it now that I was working out… I was also drinking like a fish through the weekend. It was a lot of work and I wasn’t making a lot of progress.

Aaron is always reaching out to us asking how he can help with goals and so he and I sat down and built out a plan that included working out and we began talking about food. About a week after our first conversation I asked him if he wouldn’t mind actually being my direct accountability partner on the diet part of this since by myself I knew eventually I would make an excuse one weekend of why it’s okay to drink or get crazy on the eating. He said yes, but that I might not like it if I wasn’t holding up my end because if I was asking him to hold me accountable, then that is what he was going to do. We put together a meal plan. It included the Daniel fast (strictly only vegetables, fruits and water for 21 days) and then afterwards introduce clean meats etc. I suggested a 30 day stint of not drinking; but Aaron wanted to see 60 days. They are both a long time to me so one is the same as the other as far as I was concerned. So I said yeah let’s do it, we committed to each other and the rest is history and history in the making folks. I made sure I got into the gym at least 3 times a week. If I missed a day I made sure I was there the next.

Each of the coaches at IR as well as all the people who train there are just so nice and encouraging that even when it is a difficult workout the people make it literally enjoyable. I started the 21 day Daniel fast at 265 pounds. I took some pictures. I am fortunate enough to have 2 friends at work who actively encourage my healthy choices –and that is putting it lightly. I logged what I ate every day in the myfitnesspal app which Aaron followed me on. I documented other data like sleep, weight, exercise and how I felt daily in a spreadsheet that I would share periodically. Aaron and I saw each other at least 3 times a week at the gym and texted nearly daily about the progress or just to say it was another good day in the books. 21 days later I weighed 28 pounds less at 237 pounds. I took some more pictures. My Triglycerides dropped from near 400 to 119. My blood pressure went from 150/100 to 120/70. My doctor said whatever you are doing keep doing it. The XXL shirts that I wore are now loose on me and I am almost into an XL shirt. Still just a little too snug to look sexy in -maybe next week. The size 38 jeans that used to fit snug now require a belt to stay on. Soon I will be in size 36.

I’ve really only just begun. I still have a long way to go.

Improved Quality of Life Means Immediate Results at Innovative Results

May 28, 2014 by ptpt 4 Comments

By Aaron Guyett

Immediate Results!

AM Pushup Line

That’s right! We claim immediate results! Not the type that is pledged from plastic surgeons, lipo-suction docs, pharmacists, and eight-minute abs (or is it six-minute abs now?). The immediate results that Innovative Results is touting come from the deep desire to make a lasting change. The person that comes to us for that change, shows up, does the work, and accepts the coaching to improve, even when there is a little bit of intimidation or downright fear. Below are just a few changes each client should begin to notice as they get serious about the change they are pursuing with Innovative Results (IR). The two main areas clients see immediate results when they train at IR are improved performance and elevated understanding of fitness.

Improved Performance

mariane rope climb

Performance becomes immediate when one becomes aware that there is a need for improvement. While this sounds largely philosophical, think about it for a minute. If a person has been sedentary for years, or even if someone has been active for years, but did not know that breath was an essential part of movement performance—there would be an immediate return on investment at Innovative Results. Proper breathing sequence is just the beginning of improved performance one immediately receives when they train at Innovative Results. The two biggest areas improvements in performance are: Increased Energy and Increased Body Awareness.

Increased Energy

Just starting a consistent, methodical, and purposeful exercise routine will do incredible justice for your circadian cycles (wake, sleep, and energy rhythms). When the norm of hitting snooze is replaced by the wakeful intention of getting stronger, leaner, looking better, or feeling better, your energy levels are already transitioning toward improvement. Even if you have only been working out at Innovative Results for a very short time, you may have noticed improvement in your focus, energy, and production at work or with your family. This is important stuff in our lives!!

Increased Body Awareness

I always think of the seen in Anchorman where the character Ron Burgandy talks about his ubulus attached to his upper dorsimas, but he really has no clue what he is talking about. This scene is hilarious, and can often be a sad reality in the world of armchair quarterbacks and Internet geniuses. There is little more satisfying to me than when someone looks at me with delight, because they were able to “feel” their abs engage in a push-up, squat, hip-hinge, or inverted row. Incredible body awareness can be found in one session, and change the way a person’s body moves for the rest of their life. This is quality improvement, and transformation worth thousands of dollars in surgery, therapy, or other care related to the lack of body awareness that most of us experience daily.

Elevated Understanding of Fitness

Training at Innovative Results will help people engage fitness from the understanding that emotions, psychology, and action inspire us to achieve our goals, but it is the science, methodology, and consistency that actually bring us to the point of success. I often explain to people that I LOVE the FACT that getting a person from point A to point B is plainly science, but helping them embrace the science is largely emotional. If a person does not have a deep, emotional why, driving them toward their fitness goal(s), it will probably be hard for that person to accept the pain and persistence that comes with embracing the science of physiologiLogan Parfaitcal and psychological change. The cool part of this problem is that humans are creatures of habits. Once we accept and engage with the mindset, movement, and recovery necessary for change, it becomes easier and easier to make it a part of our lifestyle habits.

Mindset Knowledge and Coaching

Every coach at Innovative Results knows the intricacies of mindset when it comes to improving the quality of life by moving better, feeling better, or looking better (in other words leaning, toning, strengthening, healing, and happiness). Innovative Results coaches teach that a positive attitude isn’t absolutely imperative to the process, but it sure does make the process more enjoyable and easier to handle. The coaches themselves interject positivity in their own process of diligent change and growth, to create a platform of positivity in which to stand the client and community firmly on. Motivation as understood by the Innovative Results coach is an indelible part of the client’s improvement, transformation, change, and/or empowerment. Without knowledge of where each person is and where they want to go, with a deep emotional why to get there, the coach and client usually flounder in a sea of uncertainty and no shows (not to mention spotty or zero results). Lastly, the support that is found in each session, with the IR Team, with the IR Family, through the IR facility, and with all of the friends and family of the community, is how Innovative Results continues to improve and grow. The Innovative Results team member and family member expresses a desire to promote the important mindset qualities found in its program to the entire community, because, let’s face it, we are losing the war on obesity and quality of life, and we all want at least our community to win, if not our whole nation. Not to mention the program’s other immediate benefits of movement and recovery knowledge, and coaching.

Movement Knowledge and CoachingLunchWorkout 4_21_14

With certificates, degrees, licenses, and an accumulated 60 years worth of knowledge in human movement the Innovative Results trainers coach this particular skill with passion and intelligence that surpasses most gyms that tout one certificate or a few years experience. Innovative Results takes its knowledge and coaching of movement so seriously that it spends several hours critiquing each progression and each exercise to ensure it holds the highest return for physiological improvement while remaining extremely low on the risk for injury, and trying to uphold fun found in a fitness playground. IR trainers use planes of movement, energy systems, and progressive adaptation when they build each workout for the client, being sure to have several degrees of modification and acceleration to meet each level of client. Besides the coaches bringing energy, focus, and intelligent feedback to each client, the strong veteran clients naturally motivate and help support the new clients that hold huge opportunities for improving, all while working hard, focusing well, and building results together.

Recovery Knowledge and Coaching

People get hurt, period. This is a fact every person on the planet must live with, however, it does not have to chain people to the couch, computer, car, and cell phone, and keep humanity from enjoying life. Actually, if a person gains knowledge and coaching in movement, and couples it with recovery knowledge and coaching, they severely reduce the chance for injury, while greatly improving the opportunity to look better, feel better, and move better. This is a skill no one should ignore or shrug off. Each IR coach is geared with vast knowledge in rest, fuel, and techniques to heal old nagging problems and create improvements in performance and aesthetics (how we look in the mirror or in clothes). These recovery points include: sleep, stress-management, focus, hydration, nutrition, SMR, activation, and more.

Stop Weighing, Start Dunking

Woman-with-Scale

By Cori Lefkowith

Ladies – Stop Weighing, Start Dunking

Does your mood fluctuate depending on what your weight was that morning?

Do you feel like your not getting results just because the number on the scale hasn’t budged?

STOP WEIGHING!

Or at least stop weighing more than once a week or even once a month.

Measuring your weight every day does nothing but make you obsessed with a number that truly means NOTHING!

Our scale weight can fluctuate day to day just because we ate a little extra sodium or are retaining water (maybe even because of your period).

So why put so much stock in a number that can be so easily changed?

YOU SHOULDN’T.

While weighing CAN help you see progress over weeks, months or even years, it isn’t the best measurement since it can see easily fluctuate.

AND because MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT!

I’ve had a ton of women come up to me concerned that their weight hasn’t changed yet baffled because they do feel like they are looking better.

I always tell them the same thing – You’ve probably changed your body composition.

When you change your body composition, the weight on the scale may not change or at least it may not change drastically EVEN if you are seeing drastic changes in your body.

Switching one pound of fat for muscle won’t change your weight on the scale but it will drastically change the way your clothes fit.

So then how do you measure these body composition changes?

With BODY FAT TESTING!FitnessWave

Many women shy away from body fat testing. They say they just don’t want to know.

SERIOUSLY!?!

You just don’t want to know yet you weigh every day!?!

AH!

At least with body fat testing you get a MEANINGFUL number…Not just a random number on a scale that, for some reason, you equate with being in shape.

Body fat testing tells what your scale weight really means. It tells you how much fat vs. muscle you have.

A 5ft 4inch woman who weighs 125lbs on the scale can look two very different ways – And body fat testing can tell her if that weight is right for her.

Body fat testing gives you a real number to shoot for. It is an accurate measurement of results, not one that can fluctuate because you look at a donut the wrong way.

And the best body fat test is the hydrostatic body composition testing AKA underwater weighing or THE DUNK TANK!

Working Out Should Be fun and SOCIAL!

April 27, 2014 by ptpt Leave a Comment

lose-weight-without-boring-cardio-

By Cori Lefkowith

We are social creatures.

Heck….We even like to go to the bathroom together.

Yet all too often we choose to go on a cardio machine and workout by ourselves.

No wonder it can be hard to stick to a routine!

Instead of working out by ourselves, let’s use the fact that we are social creatures – let’s make working out social.

Because being social may just be the motivation you need to make the switch to a healthy lifestyle!

Don’t believe me?

Then check out these reasons to make your workouts a social event!

• Working out will be more FUN when you have your friends around you. And “fun” generally means it is something you will WANT to do again.
• Friends hold you accountable. Friends will check in on you when you skip a session. They will check in on you and help give you a reason to go even when you don’t necessarily “feel” like it.
• Friends motivate us. Knowing you will be letting someone down if you don’t go will keep you showing up even when you aren’t motivated.
• Working out with friends can also push you to work harder. If your friend is doing heavier weight or more reps, you are probably going to push yourself to do a few more reps as well!
• Friends will also support you. Have you plateaued? Have your results slowed? Having a friend there you can chat with who may be going through the same thing or have gone through the same thing in the past, can really help you push through the rough patches!
• Making working out social can also help you remain dedicated to your goals. For one, you have a reason to go because the workouts are fun. Two, your friends hold you accountable if you don’t show. And three, it will keep you dedicated even when your internal motivation wears off because you are part of a group and you can’t let down the group!
• There is sense of community when you workout with friends. And that community gives you a strong reason to keep moving toward your goals. And it also allows you to help OTHERS move toward their goals as well! You can both get support and GIVE SUPPORT!
