Innovative Results Helped Chris Shed 20lbs and Alleviate Back Pain

September 8, 2017 by Jessica 2 Comments

ChrisCalhoonJoining a gym shouldn’t be about popularity and fads. Your fitness routine should help you grow mentally and physically, it’s a lifestyle change that will continue to support you, your goals, your health and lead you to an overall improved quality of life.

For over 10 years, Innovative Results has worked to provide our clients with the tools they need to achieve just that – An Improved Quality of Life.

Check out Chris’ Innovative Results experience!

When/Why did you start training at IR?
In late 2015, I began searching for a new way of working out and getting in shape. Until that time, I had been a member at a national ‘mega-gym’ for years, however, it wasn’t very motivating, and I wasn’t getting any results. Then one day, I stumbled upon a short introduction video on IR, and I knew immediately this was the place for me. Days later, I had my first workout with IR and my life was changed for the better.

Chris Calhoon Before
Chris prior to joining Innovative Results in December 2015.

What have you improved since you started training at IR?
Everything – strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity. Loss of nearly 20lbs. Back pain has been dramatically reduced.

Some metrics that I have achieved: 70 feet on the versa-climber in 10 seconds, 43 push ups in 1 minute, 3 minute straight arm plank.

How has IR improved other areas of my life?
Inspired to be more active with my life, and be more active outdoors – recently, hiked to the summit of Saddleback Mountain, the highest point in Orange County.

I sleep better and the workouts help reduce stress levels.

Why do you stay committed to your improvement in and out of the gym?
In the words of Dylan Thomas, “Do not go gently into that good night – old age should burn and rave at close of day.” While I don’t think I’m old yet, IR workouts help keep me feeling young, and help keep the effects of time and age at bay.

Alex Calvillo Improved her quality of life at Innovative Results - The Orange County Fitness Playground
Improved Quality of Life

Alex Calvillo is special to me.

She really, really, really wanted to make a BIG change in her looks and lifestyle, and she had already lost a lot of weight before coming to Innovative Results.

She worked hard, and focused for a while, but became a bit frustrated with the amount of effort she put in, and the slow changing body.

I had a few deep conversations with her, and we were able to see how far she had come, as well as change her perspective on future outcomes…this is when the BIG IMPROVEMENTS BEGAN TO HAPPEN.

Her physical body continued its slow and steady improvement, but her mindset, attitude, motivation, and energy SKYROCKETED!!!

Since then, she has continued to be a new person mentally, and it has been awesome to read her raving reviews on Yelp!, Facebook, and Google+…as well as get to hear her perspective on fitness training at Innovative Results.

Check out her perspective below:

Push ups, sit ups, pull ups, chin ups, squats, deadlifts, rows, and the list goes on.

My mind.

All better.

What kept you coming back to Innovative Results?

The coaches and the progressions.

I didn’t have to think about what I was going to be doing for my daily workout because they write it all for you.

Each morning a coach says hello to you like you’re the only one that’s walked through the door.

So excited to be doing what they’re doing, and it shows.

6 Keys to Improving Your Physical Health

April 3, 2016 by ptpt 1 Comment

By Aubrie Pohl

-A constant lethargic feeling.lethargic
–Achy joints and tired muscles.
-A lack of motivation and desire.
-Sitting down for more hours than standing.
-Feeling like you are capable of so much more.

These are all characteristics of a less-than optimal health.

Our physical state of health can affect every aspect of our life.

Human bodies are incredible.

Do you ever think about how much your body loves you?

Your body is always adapting and accommodating to the situation at hand.
Constantly healing.

Constantly trying to make your life easier for you.

It will get strong if you start strength training.

It will continue to breathe when you don’t even think about breathing!

However, our bodies will only work at their optimal level if we do our part to keep them in the healthiest condition that we can.

There are many ways of improving your physical health, so we can make great steps towards an improved quality of life!

Here are the 6 Keys to Improving Your Physical Health:

1. Movementvictoria anthony collage

We are born to move.

Our bodies love movement.
Without it, our joints ache, our bodies inflame, and we experience pain and weakness.

With every push, pull, reach, stretch, twist, jump, lift, and dance our bodies reciprocate and strengthen, lengthen, expand, open, and grow towards their greatest potential.

Most of our modern day jobs require us to sit for hours at a time, performing robotic motions and allowing our bodies to be stagnant. But they yearn for the freeing sensation of muscles contracting and expanding, of giving and receiving.

Encourage yourself to move on a regular basis, freely and openly, in whatever way feels best.

Even if that means circling your shoulders in line at the grocery store.
Stretching your legs while watching TV.
Twisting your spine as you lay in bed.
Moving your body is always an option.
Feeling better is ALWAYS an option.

2. Nutrient rich, Unprocessed, Living Foods.binderlayingopen_550x634

Your body takes the food you eat and breaks down the food into the macronutrients and micronutrients you need, then reassembles those into your cells to provide you with the energy that allows you to thrive and grow towards your optimal being.

However, your body is only as efficient as the material it has to work with.

The quality of food you send into your body can have a powerful effect on your mental clarity, your ability to perform, and your overall function.

The “Standard American Diet”, also known as SAD…. is sad!

Highly processed foods and a portion distortion leave our bodies critically short of nutrients our bodies crave.
Everybody is different, but we all have an intuitive wisdom that allows the fibers of our being to send us signals of true wellness.
Notice the way your body and energy levels respond after eating certain foods.

So what should you eat?

Eat foods with no labels.
More nutrient dense fruits, vegetables, lean meats.
Less sugary, carbohydrate dense processed foods.
Shop only around the perimeter of the grocery store.
Eat without distractions and notice how foods make you feel.
If you see a food that is not something your great-grandparents ate when they were young, disregard it.
Drink water all day, every day.

After all, a healthy outside starts from the inside.

3. Sunshinesun

A little sunshine every day can boost your mood and serotonin levels, our happy hormone.

If we allow our bodies to absorb a healthy amount of Vitamin D through the sun, we can prevent illnesses that occur from Vitamin D deficiency.

The sun also warms our muscles to reduce inflammation and stiffness.
a small 15 minute walk through the sunshine can do wonders for your body and mind!

Your body will tell you when you’ve had enough sun, turning a shade of pink or feeling warm to the touch.

So go outside for a healthy amount of sun and feel healthier!

4. Sleep

Our hasty, task-filling lifestyle has the ability to distract us from getting enough sleep.
We get caught up in our busy lives, and sacrifice sleep to get more things done.

Our body revitalizes itself during sleep.
Sleep is as vital to sustaining a healthy, energetic life as eating, drinking, and breathing!

Allow your body a restful night and experience yourself feeling attentive, refreshed, and more prepared to challenge your day, so you can live your full potential.

Even a short nap during the day can reinvigorate your system to take on the rest of the day!

Develop an intimate relationship with your body to discover the amount of sleep that you need, and feel your energy increase!

5. Less Chemicals

Living a life with less chemical additives can have a profound effect on your well-being.

Hand soap, shampoos, perfumes, make up, lotions, deodorants, air fresheners, and many other products can potentially contain dangerous chemicals that can disrupt your body’s functions.

As you educate yourself about what products your body is absorbing, you will be able to make conscious decisions on how to lessen the amount of toxins you take in and discover better-for-you options.

6. Positive Actions

Instilling our actions in forward momentum will allow us to continue on a path of self-transformation and success to make our lives more meaningful and satisfying.

By taking the right steps in the right direction, positive actions become intentional activities that manifest more motivation, happiness, and improved life conditions.

Mindfully build good habits, pursue goals, endeavor to live the life you have imagined and you can confidently move in the direction of your highest potential!

In fact, a change of behavior can alter how we think and feel.

Even our poses and demeanor have the potential to change the chemical make-up of our bodies.
Smile and you will feel happier!

Stand tall with your chest out and you will assert confidence!

At any moment, you have the power to construct your decisions and actions towards an improved quality of life.

A Life Hack: Rest More to Accomplish More

August 23, 2015 by Jessica Leave a Comment

By Aubrie Pohl

You can feel the combination of motivation and your vision magnetizing you, pulling you toward your goal just as it is being drawn towards you.

You create a schedule, and set intention to the tasks you will accomplish to reach that goal.

Every day, you take the right steps in the right direction.

Training more, moving more, you feel the diligent effort adding up, allowing you to move better, look better, and feel better.

Then suddenly, fatigue sets in.

Your muscles grow weary, your mind becomes dull and you become perplexed about what happened.

Despite valiant effort to reach your greatest potential, the wisdom of your body was gently reminding you that you need to rest.

Put the Pep Back in your Step

In our lives we are often on the run and may not notice when our energy becomes drained.

Keeping your inner vision focused and following the path towards it undoubtedly displays integrity, but it can’t be sustained unless you nurture yourself.

If we go beyond our limits, we actually use more energy than we have and, essentially, operate on a deficit.

By using just a couple techniques for rest, we access powerful tools for revitalizing our bodies.

Stress Won’t Let You Rest!

Stress is one of the most debilitating and widespread conditions present in the world.

In fact, it is so common that we think it is normal.

Within the elaborate system of our bodies, our stress response evolved and developed as a survival mechanism during life-threatening situations.

However, nowadays humans are getting stressed about EVERYTHING.

Manifesting justifications to get stressed about situations or experiences, stress can hold you back in all aspects of life.

The body responds by slowing down digestion, suppressing the immune system, and causing a ruckus in the system, which will definitely prevent you from rest!

There’s good news!

The stress we commonly see is a fallacy, it is an irrational feeling, and you can manage stress into a tool that makes you stronger.

You can reduce the stress you experience through mindfulness of your thoughts and feelings, knowing that at any moment you are capable of relaxing.

Learning methods such as yoga and meditation will allow you to master your emotions and improve stress handling abilities.

[By the way, I teach yoga at Innovative Results! Tuesday & Wednesday at 11am, Thursday & Friday at 8pm :)]

Every individual is different, but finding a method to liberate from stress will in turn allow you to experience the rest you need.

Essential Slumber

When our lives become busy, sleep tends to be one of the first things we sacrifice.

We get caught up in the idea that by doing more we will get more done, so we stay up later and sleep less.

Decreasing an hour or two of slumber so we can increase our task list, and then we increase our caffeine intake to manipulate the body’s energy levels.

However, it is during sleep where the body revitalizes itself.

Sleep is as vital to sustaining a healthy, energetic life as eating, drinking, and breathing!

A night of ample sleep is a potent energizer, fostering a healthy body and a vibrant mind.

On the contrary, a lack of sleep creates a sluggish body and a foggy mind.

Give yourself the gift of a restful night and experience yourself feeling more refreshed, attentive, and ready for life’s challenges so you can live your full potential.

Knowing when to rest is as important as the work we do.

Today by seeking rest, you can rejuvenate yourself and improve your quality of life.

Which Is More Important: Sleep or Exercise? Find Out if Sleep Or Exercise is Better for You in the Morning

July 26, 2015 by Jessica 1 Comment

Sleep or Exercise in the Morning?Should I sleep in or work out?

Am I feeling fatigued because I am over working and over training, OR am I fatigued and drained due to a lack of activity?

If I don’t work out, wouldn’t I lose all the gains I’ve made? But I’m so tired!

These are all great questions to ask yourself right before hitting the snooze button to catch a few more extra Z’s in the morning.

We’ve all heard that for our bodies and brains to perform optimally, we as humans need a proper balance of both sleep and exercise.  Sleep plays a HUGE role in our “overall physical and emotional health, helping your brain function, reducing your risk of chronic disease, promoting mental well-being, and boosting your immune system. Studies also show that sleep loss is associated with increased hunger and appetite, linking a lack of zzzs with an increased risk of obesity.”

Then again, there are so many benefits to exercising in the morning. You’ll get your workout done before the rest of the day happens. You’ll already be kick-starting your day. Plus, all that exercise in the morning makes you sleep much better at night.

So what do we do?! Do we choose sleep or exercise?

Katie Golde over at Greatist helps break down the importance of maintaining the balance between sleep and exercise in this week’s article “Which Is More Important: Sleep or Exercise?” Get the facts on what’s best for you and your body.

Attitude IS Everything for Looking Better, Feeling Better, and Moving Better

May 29, 2014 by ptpt Leave a Comment

just-tired

By Aaron Guyett

I understand that my health is declining, because I feel physical lethargic and sleepy, and my doctor is telling me I have these issues.

I feel sad, depressed, angry, and frustrated that I have these physical obstacles that are keeping my from enjoying a satisfying and improved quality of life.

I am not walking, working out, eating well, or sleeping well, and my time is primarily devoted to work or family.

These three statements above stipulate my attitude, which is doubtful about the opportunity to improve my quality of life; therefore, I will not be pursuing a change, and I am a victim.

“An attitude is a mental state that exerts influence over an individual’s behaviors. Attitudes have three components: (1) a cognitive component, which refers to a concept; (2) an affective component, which is emotion; and (3) a behavioral component, which is the readiness to act.”[1]

One small change in attitude, may lead to bigger changes in systemic issues throughout society.

If obstacles were seen as opportunities for growth, development, and life-experience that produce courage and hope.

If conflict was seen as a rich relationship aspect that built integrity, honesty, trust, communication, and a chance to be open to new ideas, while still remaining passionate about our own ideas.

If commitment were not just a good-intention, but a sound call to great accountability and epic forgiveness.

If hard work, focused intensity, and patient endurance were values that drove the positive attitudes of us all toward something bigger than ourselves.

My friend illustrated at the beginning would no longer be a victim, but a person that takes joy in the arduous, but life-giving process of change.

Recovery is MUCH More Than Skipping a Workout

May 3, 2014 by ptpt Leave a Comment

LunchWorkout 4_21_14

By Mark Elmasry

“Man that was a good workout!” We’ve all said recently enough, or how about, “Ouch, I am sore”?

But the last thing, and possibly the worst thing you may be saying is, “I’m too beat up to do anything today.”

These are all indications of a couple of problems.

Firstly, feeling “beat up” is a sign of your muscles becoming slightly more acidic acutely following exercise, or days later you may be feeling the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness caused by sensitive muscle fiber endings. Secondly, it can be attributed to a poor diet and poor sleep.

Proper nutrition is what fuels our muscles, providing our body the nutrients necessary for repairing torn muscles post workout, while sleep allows for hormonal benefit and aids in muscle growth and rebuilding.

Last, and certainly not least as to reasons why you have ‘thrown in the towel’ for exercise that day are neglected recovery tricks.

For starters, we are not all lovers of pain, so soft tissue manipulation on a foam roller or trigger point tool of some sort is not something we all religiously do as we should.

Soft Tissue Manipulation (STM), be it that you go to a fancy massage clinic, performed self massage, or self myofacial release(SMR) with a ball, roller, stick, etc. should be done constantly. There is always some area in your body that has recently been over-worked and is extra stiff or sensitive. It is necessary that we release those trigger points, whether they are latent or active, and obviously painful.CB mobility

Helpful Hint for STM or SMR – “Less is More” when it comes to targeting a specific area of soreness or tightness. Putting continuous and concentrated pressure for multiple minutes at a time will cause even further sensitivity and even bruising. Short, simple, and straight to the point is effective and essential for taking care of sore muscles and ridding our body of hazardous trigger points and sore muscles that will ruin our body mechanics.

Playing with temperature can also be a highly effective tool for recovery. “Throw some ice on that bad boy!” is an age old saying from all kinds of uneducated coaches but is extremely valuable and helpful for recovery. Ice application by itself for a couple minutes brings down pain levels, swelling, general edema(swelling), and stops the excessive nerve signals from the brain. Not only that, but applying ice for a few minutes causes the blood flow to slow down tremendously and then come back with oxygen and nutrient rich blood cells to help repair the torn tissue. Heat is the opposite, and acts in a different yet beneficial way as well.

3 Simple Things To Focus On If You Want To Get in Shape and Feel Your Best

August 27, 2013 by ptpt 3 Comments

We are always trying to figure out new ways to help people get results.Eat-well-move-daily-hydrate-often-sleep-lots

Typically we try and add new exercises, try new diets, do this, don’t do that, etc.

The truth is that we are all making this fitness/health thing way too complicated.

If you want to get in shape, you really only need to do 3 simple things.

Move everyday, eat quality food and sleep….everyday.

Obesity has really taken hold of our culture in the last 20-30 years.

When I was young, food was more real and my mom couldn’t keep us inside.

Guess what?  No kids were overweight.

It really is that simple.

So what changed?

I believe that the computer, the couch and the car have combined to make us incredibly sedentary.  Most of us spend our day starring at a screen, texting on the phone, driving around and barely moving at all.  This lack of activity piles up over time and then our bodies become stiff, weak and unable to handle any physical activity.  A walk up the stairs becomes unbearable.

Our food supply has also been altered by industry.  Everyone from the farmers to the grocery stores are motivated by money and want to squeeze as much profit as possible from their product.  Over the years this has led to less quality and more quantity.  People eat more, but are becoming more deficient in essential minerals, vitamins, etc.  These deficiencies are leading to more ailments, such as headaches, inability to sleep, stomach problems, and a myriad of other symptoms.

In order to fix these two main problems, I believe people need to make a few simple changes.

farmers market1.  Commit to eating better quality foods.

I don’t expect people to become perfect over night, but learn to be conscious of what you eat and how you feel.  Regardless of your religious beliefs, think of it this way:  If God made it, eat.  The more we touch it, package it and market it, RUN!

  • Drink more water
  • Eat more vegetables, nuts, seeds, quality meats, eggs, plants, roots, herbs, and seasonings.
  • Drop sodas, snacks, chips, fast food, and most other packaged goods.

2.  Move every day.  move everyday

Notice that I said move instead of working out.  We were designed to walk, run, climb, crawl, and jump around.  Start by committing to a walk at lunch or after work.  Simply getting outside and moving around for a few minutes can change your mindset, improve your mood and clear your head.  Once you feel up to it, you can take on bigger challenges that interest you.

sleep3.  Get some Sleep

A lot of people that I help every week are chronically tired, worn down and beat up.  Quality sleep allows us to hit a reset button mentally and physically, allowing our body to repair and replenish.  Without sleep our body is unable to recover properly and that leaves us performing at a lower level.  Try turning off the computer, tv, phone and other distractions at least a couple hours before bed.  Read a book, talk with  your loved ones, go for a walk or similar.  This will help you relax before going to bed and will make falling asleep more simple.

A lot of people want to make fitness complicated, but I do not believe that it needs to be that way.  Keep it simple, stay committed and work towards implementing these three things into your daily habits.  You wont be perfect initially, but your goal is to improve, stay consistent and learn along the way.  Before you know it, your friends will be asking what you are doing to get such amazing results!

Balance in Motion – Sleep and Muscle Recovery Tips

April 18, 2012 by ptpt 2 Comments

Sleep and Muscle Recovery

Not making the strength gains you think you should be?

How’s your sleep?

Lack of sleep and poor sleep quality negatively impacts coordination, mental focus and inhibits muscle growth and repair.

Why?

Many people don’t realize that sleep is an active physiological state for our bodies. There are thousands of processes taking place that affect our hormones, immune system, and muscle recovery, in addition to affecting our mood and mental clarity. During deep sleep our brains are less active, so the blood flow to our muscles increases, rejuvenating and repairing our tissues.  This is also when our body releases most of its growth hormone. Having a deficiency in growth hormone is associated with increased obesity, decreased muscle mass and a reduced exercise capacity.

One or two nights of reduced sleep probably won’t impact your performance too much; however, consistently not getting enough sleep could be the culprit keeping you from achieving your goals. According to the the National Sleep Foundations guidelines the average adult should get between seven and nine hours per night.
